Last fall I picked up the kit to kitbash into something else. The kit is Lazer cut and interlocking. Not really able to move parts around easily, so decided on doing the d7. Also it came with a nice dummy engine and guns.
Instead of doing a standard sport scale, thought ai would try dressing it up more.

The engine and guns are resin 3d printed. Only downside is the guns are 1 piece and end plate is solid. Very hard to paint the inside of the shroud and barrels.

To paint the guns I diluted the paint a lot. The paint kept wicking away from the center to the sides.
To stop this, I dipped them in the paint and then hit them with the heat gun to dry the paint. It was a rinse and repeat afare. In the end I liked the worn look.

The engine was easier to do and weather.

For scale details I started with the hinges. Used telescoping brass tubes to make them up. A few failed attempts but got enough and  I was happy with them.

Next was a pull/pull system for the tail.

Next up was the cockpit. Using photos I designed part to 3d print and used scans to make some others

The cheek fairings are decent. I opened up the louvers and had to paint the inside as the wood was visible the the new openings.
To continue dressing up the nose. Fake panels and hinges were added. Designed some Fokker nuts and printed 50 of them for install. 3d printed filler caps and counter sunk them too.

The wings were built and are ready for covering.
The tail was built and covering was started. The H-stab end up a failure. The balsa was too soft. It distorted when the fabric was applied.
The saft balsa was replaced and 2nd attempt to cover failed too,  whole stab shifted. Decided to call it quits for the day.
Came up from shop and saw the email about now needing TC pilot cert. That took the build wind out of my sails. Project sat since then.
Getting ready to pick this up again but on a slower pace as it's flying season now.
Plane Needs the interplanetary struts made and the gear legs covered with wood.

It's so great to see someone actually build an RC model.  Fabrication from scratch; how cool is that.

Super job Mark.  Keep on posting Smiley

Got back to work on this. Decided to finish up the gear. Built up the legs and covered them. Added the cross braces as well. Noticed that the real had 4 straps on top. Made these as well. Think I should have used a thicker material so it would show more. Can't really see the 'screw heads' holding the straps.

I also framed up a new horizontal tail. Tomorrow I may do more covering.

Got back into this project by adding rib stitching. Using ceconite light fabric for this. Ran out of Koverall and wanted to try this material.  It has a tighter weave. Got better at making them by the end. Still need to seal the covering.

Almost done. Need bolts to mount engine and secure servo hatches in wings.
Chose a Belgian scheme to be different.
