after the robart hinged aileron failure and my crazy glued hinge failure.
It would seem that epoxy does not wet the robart hinges unless they are well roughened
and
some CA wicking hinge material does not wick well
The pull test is not a good measure of whether the control surface will stay: I did this and they were solid.  After the loss of the elevator, I gave the remaining elevator what I would term a destructive pull and it came out with hardly any balsa attached!!!!  I suggest pinning all CA hinges http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng3OczSp3Ng
and
gorilla glue for the robart hinges http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnBCelaWyP8   II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_IKon3CiDM ;  III  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sny6BT14Zwo

I am a big fan of Hisol. It seems to out perform Gorilla glue as Al (I think) would attest. it is  stronger than anything I've ever used, by a long shot. Just my two pennies...mike

Just FYI, the plane that Mike lost was built by me, and gorilla glue was used on all the hinges (robart). I flew the thing in multiple IMAC contests, and hucked the crap out of it with no problems. It had been sitting around dormant for a couple of years, so after the swelling, heating, cooling etc of the wood over the years happened, most likely the glue just finally let go.

Personally, Ive never had an issue with gorilla glue, epoxy, or CA hinges for that matter (knock on wood)

I've only had CA hinges fail once over the years because i used old/stale glue.  Always make sure you use good, fresh thin CA and give it a few good drops quickly to make sure it all soaks in.

I had the rudder on my 80cc Yak fall off twice using Robart hinges and expanding poly type glue.  The first time I used Gorilla glue and the rudder nearly fell off in flight.  The second time I used the Lepage knockoff of gorilla glue and the rudder completely fell off.  I glued it in for the third and last time, using Robart hinges, with Hysol and it seems to be holding well.  For me, I will never use the Lepage polyurethane glue as it is, in my opinion, crap.  Gorila glue has its uses and is great if you need a glue that will expand and fill in the gaps but for any hinge that requires a 2 part epoxy, it is Hysol all the way.  The 2 part epoxy that we get in the hobby stores is garbage when compared to 9462 Hysol.  It may take a day to dry but it is well worth the wait.

It seems that my 3rd hand airplane from which the elevator came off in flite was built by someone who may started the CA hinging process with a drop or two and waited to see the effect, thus stopping the proper wetting of the hinge... and applied the remainder later after the initial CA had dried.
But Nota Bene = I did a pull test on the elevators!!! when I was going over the airplane after buying it and still one came off in flight

Certainly some CA hinges wick better than others. So the material of the hinge is a factor.  The GP hinge material wicks well but is prone to fluffing at the end which makes it difficult to insert (there is scope for fingers here Smiley

I have used various Hysol products on spacecraft components back in the 80s.  The warning label said " This product is KNOWN to cause cancer".  I wonder what the warning label says on the modern stuff???????  We used to mix it walking away from the starting spot ... all this is a clean room... no wonder we glow in the dark  Lips Sealed

It looks like hinge glue time expires (Tx'd) as a function of time, exposure to fuel and sunlight etc.
Shouldn't pinning the hinges allow a RTB in a flight where the hinge(s) fail???????????? [not the robarts]

for some reason www.aircraftspruce.ca does not work: it times out

if anybody is going to order some 9462 Hysol, I would like some too and will kick in for it.

By the way Hysol products back in the 80s had a short shelf life...what is it now???

Hi Guys
Have never had a hinge problem.
I know the last few Arfs I have, used ca hinges and I hope i never have a pullout.
All my other stuff over the years I have used all types. When I glue in a hinge I usually coat the hinge line with Vaseoline and take the heat gun to it to make sure it is well lube from the glue. I only use slow drying epoxy ,24 hour stuff and I coat the hole first. Of course you rough the hinge, coat with glue and then insert it in the hole. This may be overkill but the hinge comes back out and is recoated with epoxy.I only do one side at a time and the next day I do the other side. Most times I put the hinge in the moveable part first (Aileron,Elevator, Rudder)
If for some reason a hinge fits loose when you first start make sure you you fill it with sheet or a plug and start again. You cannot expect any glue to hold if you have an oversize hole. The glues that foam mabe ok but I don't see how you keep a hinge directly on the hinge line.
I have always sealed my Hinge line on the elevators and ailerons on the bottom to keep the air from flowing through. Clear tape or plastic covering work well.
This may sound like a lot of work and it is but lets face it the last thing you want to hear is that flutter noise.
Not only the hinge but you want a good solid connection to the servo. Won't matter how solid the hinges are if you have a sloppy conection you will loose in the end.
