Hey guys, I started my Su-31 build today and so far so good. I do need a little bit of advice however. I'm ready to install the dihedral brace and join the wings. The instructions say to simply expoy the brace in place to join the wings. I'm wondering if is should also removed the covering at the joint and apply epoxy the whole joint as well... I would think that would add further strength and that can't be a bad thing...

Hi Dave
I would think both sides of the wing root rib should have some glue on them otherwise you would have a weak joint.I always used fiberglass on the center section but you probably don't need to do that especially where the covering is already on there.
I like your handle King Of The Wild Nextstars.

Thanks Grant, it seemed to only make sense to get some sort of adhesive in there... But the manual doesn't call for it... Mind you it also told me to CA the hardwood blocks in for the servos... Needless to say that got a hit of epoxy instead...

Aileron servos mounted... Check
Wings joined... Check
Tail assembled.... Check
Belly pan installed... Check

Now if I could only figure out this engine mounting stuff I'd almost be in business lol... I'm thinking to go inverted, but I know that can lead to headaches... Also I don't think the 8oz fuel tank in this kit is large enough... Thoughts?

Hi Dave
An 8 0z tank is pretty small.Wouldn't give you much time in the air.

ENGINE       Tank
40 size        8 oz
70 size        10 to 12 if it will fit
90 size        12 to 14 oz
110 to 140  16 oz
140 to 170  16 to 20 oz
With the inverted engine ,you have to make sure they don't get full of fuel to start with "Flood".
Some planes are more suited for an inverted engine setup.Once they are running there is no difference.

Thanks Grant, Tower actually lists this DUBRO 12 oz tank as the replacement...

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD719&P=V

I may throw one of those in her. After taking a close look at the tank position and the engine I think inverted should be fine. The needle valve will be above the centre of the tank and from what I understand that's essential to prevent flooding... I should be ready for the air this weekend it I can get that tank, but two weekends from now 100%  Cheesy

Now I just need to find someone to maiden it for me

Hi Dave
Dubro tanks are good, been using them for years.
12 oz is the way to go.
Being a member of the Avon club for only 2 years you bring up a good point about getting help. Other clubs have always had instructors.
I'm not sure about Avon, don't think we need them.
I think all you have to do is ask and most guys would be willing to help.
Some I know are not comfortable flying another plane .
With all the talent we have at AVIA  you should have no problem getting help.
I know at one time you had to have an instructor and do a few things before you were awarded your Macc Wings.
Not sure how it works now or if it is reqired.
I'll see if I can find the format we use to folow.

Pretty sure if you can make 3 circuits and take out the crapper on your forth, you get your wings. If the crapper is occupied at the time, you get an added bonus.  Cheesy Grin Cheesy

Davey, lots of us were instructors elsewhere.....you've already used Capt. Cool, and someone had you up on the buddy box first day....thats a good place to start

AND, if as Joe says the crapper is occupied when you take it out, YOU become an instructor.. Cool

Haha, As far as instruction... I'm sticking with Mike and Al (if I'm not driving them crazy). I just need someone to take this darn thing up for me while I hide in the car (seeing that I assembled it, we may also need to clear the pits)

Hi Davey,

I know the feeling....but i can tell you from experience, it is better to wait till you are ready to maiden a new plane and do it yourself.

There is lots more satisfaction in it!

Gross and Gross...yet another broke back moment. That said, the old TT Pro is back in the Florio now. May need a little throttle servo tweak and perhaps the kill switch. Other than that, it should be good to go.

I am going to have a look at the Wild Pube next. Have to start with the simple stuff. I will work my way to the impossible crap. (For Me)  Wink

Whoa... This has gone to a place that may haunt my dreams for life...

On a less disturbing note, I picked up the fuel tank and remote glow adapter yesterday, and am expecting a Miracle Switch + Fuel Dot to arrive today or tomorrow...

http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/mrc1switchdotred.html

Do have to admit, I was pretty pumped when I found this little guy. It should incorporate into the Golden Arches covering scheme this plane has... Mike is going to lend me some tutelage with the engine mounting (and tank install but shhhhhhh... he doesn't know that part yet) tonight.

Now the biggest question of the build... Do I remove the butt-ugly pilot? (The thought of keeping him makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit)
