Title: Albatross D5 (D3 kit) Post by yorcram on Dec 2nd, 2023 at 3:59pm
I have always liked the looks of the Albatross D3. last summer i picked up the Dancing Wing D3 kit from Great hobbies. online pictures show fuse at lower wing isn't flat and landing gear rear attachment point was that of the D5. these should be easy fixes.
The 'instruction manual' is pictures with some part numbers on it. you need to refer to plans and the pics to build. |

the landing gear is glued into carbon tubes. I don't like that as I want to be able to remove the gear to make repairs. Modified the front gear housing and added a coupler that will keep the front secured. the rear is buried and I will use LG wires to secure the back.
front coupler installed |

online pics show there is a gap between the bottom wing and fuse bottom due to the rounded fuse. this should have a faring to blend.
Assembled the front fuse so that i can start the changes for the wing and the fuse side panel at the lower wing. Next the bottom wing build was started so i can see how to build the modifications. At this point I noticed the bottom wing was wrong for the D3, it was a D5 lower wing. Since the fuse was wrong at the wing joining, I stopped and pulled out the rear formers. Sure enough. they are oval and not flat sided. the D3 kit is actually a D5 >:( |

Changing this into a D3 wont work with the style of construction. Therefore, Albatross D5 it is!
Moved the rear LG anchor point back to where it should be. I decided to build stub wings onto the fuse. I would need to cut this part way from the lower wings. This way i can shape and join the bottom better. The carbon with tubes needed to be cut about 3.5cm shorter. this also meant I needed a new tube for the fuse to pass to the stub wings. Order some Carbon tubes from Amazon. Didn't like how the wings were secured to the fuse, so used the tungs as anti-rotation pins and will secure wings a different way. |

with the bottom wing done far enough, the rear fuselage was added.

The kit itself isn't bad. there are some wrong sized wood used. these didn't fit into the slots. Also, there are lots of wrong numbered parts in the pics, but pics and plans help identify what is needed.
this will be electric so the large hatch will be handy. what the albatross used for a dash was very minimal so not much to look at in the 'office'. Realized today that the hatch goes into the 'dashboard'. will see what can be added for the office. |

Always loved the albatross Marc. Think this is going to be nice...

Cockpit is pretty much finished. the servos are in the middle and not much way to hide them. A seat might help but up too high.
Think it looks the part. Next is the hatch and sheeting partially, then need to work out control cable runs. |

Started to assembled the hatch and this holds the engine. I didn't want to use the kit supplied so this meant i needed to hold off sheeting the hatch so I can see how to mount a 3d printed one. I got a BMW iii engine file online. Had to experiment to get a size that looks about right. the file isn't of the BMW 3a but another variant. To me, looks like an early Austrian version.
filament printers are not great for getting smooth details, resin printer would have been better. Added spark plug wires, the front cap for the camshaft and 90deg elbows for the cooling pipes (to be fitted later). the rocker valves and springs didn't print well at all. Cut those off and designed, printed new rocker arms, spring cap and made the springs from green Floral Wire that was wrapped around a pipe, then painted to look like metal again. painted and weathered a bit using aluminium, and tan dye. The printed exhaust won't work. As some BMWs used straight pipes, i am thinking of making some of those instead of the large flowing exhaust common to the bmw. Still thinking on this. |

Controls use steel cables direct to servo. I didn't want this load on the servos so made tiller arms for the elevator and rudder.
Elevator I used some nesting CF tubes, added some silicone lubrication to reduce any wear. The Rudder I ended up making a servo box on my 3d printer with a tiller post. Used an oversized servo arm. Drilled out the center for a bearing. smooth movement. Then realized that if i sheet the fuse I won't be able to run the control cables. I don't think the outlet tubes would allow for a pull wire, cable taped together to pass through. That meant finishing the tail section where the steel cables come out. this was sheeted and sealed. Can now get back to sheeting the rest of the fulelage. |

Would be a help to see if you reduced the size of your pics Marc. About 1000 x whatever would work.

last 3 photos modified, can't modify the older posts... will start making them smaller.
started sheeting the fuse. still lots to go, then sanding. will post more when body is done. |

sheeted the fuselage. kit has pre-shaped panels to sheet body. fit is pretty good but in hindsight, think I should have split the sheets into thinner strips to give a more rounded look and less sanding to shape. Still needs lots of sanding but will do outside when temps allow.
moved onto the tail. the rudder fin was an open structure like the rudder, however, the real had the fin sheeted, so I added some. assembled to see the fit. pretty good fit. |
