Title: Muffler question....
Post by Brian on Mar 12th, 2013 at 6:47am
Quick question...

I just bought a DA-100 on RC canada and plan on building a bigger plane this year, but it brings up a question on mufflers.

Great Hobbies have a blue dot clearance on some slimline 2120 mufflers for this engine...great price! But, due to the design of the engine, they are not Pitts style mufflers....they can't be, it wouldn't fit.

So, if i buy these mufflers can i fly the plane at the field?

Brian

Hi Brian:  A twin requires Can Mufflers as a Minimum. See guidelines. Some of the more experience guys with giant scale can chime in here; but, I believe the Slimline are cans.  However, verify that with the manufacturer before you buy.

Slimline 2120 are not canisters. They're regular mufflers.

You will have to pick up a set of canisters. But you may as well just wait until you get the plane in your hands. Because you will need to determine which canister will fit and what length of header and drop it requires.

For a decent canister you're going to be looking at $150-$200 a piece (MTW/K&S), and another $150 for a set of headers. Give or a take a few dollars depending on what setup the aircraft requires.

And this is why I choose to stay with 50-60cc class.

These are  the cans I used on my DL-100 in the 100cc CMP Extra. Very quiet and decent power. $300.00

(You may have to type the "dlecanset" in capitols in the URL. Avon R/C site rules would not let paste the exact URL as it had capitols in it ????)

Off Topic CommentIt should work now Steve.  It was a forum setting.  If the script sees 8 capitols in a row it warns you of capitol lock on your keyboard.  I set it to 20 so all should be good.  And I checked your url and it does work.

With the noise restrictions, make sure that whatever airframe you get that it is meant for or can accept cannister mufflers.  Not all airframes have provisions for cannisters.

Thanks for the responces guys,

I don't expect to buy something till next year to put the engine in anyway, but the feedback is great!

I am looking at a Hangar 9 Beast...but my skills need to improve a bit before i try to fly something that big and expensive.  I also want to get more experience with gas engines.

I know Mark, i should stick with electric, but i just love the sound! ;D

thanks again!

Hi All:
Just to clarify the Noise guidelines and prevent confusion for the start of the flying season I thought I would comment on Para 2 and 3 of the guideline.  The original intent of Para 2 was to ensure that these engines are as quiet as possible with the available technology. If Para 2 cannot be met, in this class, due to the unavailability of cans or physical restrictions in the airframe or engine then Para 3 is still in force.  If the plane is deemed too loud by three or more members then it doesn't fly. Para 3 and Para 6 are the "catch all" to ensure that what we fly is not too loud.

Quote:
2)      All 30cc Gas Engines and Larger, as a minimum, must have large expansion Pitts Mufflers.  All twin cylinder gas engines must have Can Mufflers as a minimum.

3)      All aircraft must be properly propped to reduce noise and all Aircraft must have effective Mufflers.

4)      Three  Aircraft only in the Air. Only one Turbine at a time in the air. Flight Priority Pole must be observed, if used.

5)      No flying before 9:00 AM.

6)      Excessive Noise can be very subjective.  We all know the "Bark" or High Pitch whine" of a prop whose sound can travel great distances. Reasonable Pilots know what is too loud and your ear is the best Sound Level Device.  Guideline #6 is for the benefit of the Club Members, as a whole, and is expected to be carried out in a Respectful, Fair and Consistent manner.  These Guidelines make every Club Member accountable to each other:

Any Three or more Members have the authority to ground Aircraft which exceeds the Club’s Noise Guidelines or bring it to the attention of a Club Executive Member who will speak to the Pilot and ground the Aircraft.  The Pilot is expected to comply with the request and resolve the issue with his Aircraft.  He may redress the matter by applying to the Club Executive who will review the issue and give a judgement. In any case the Aircraft must not Fly while the matter is being investigated.

Thanks Bruce
