Title: Season's Greetings
Post by Fingers on Dec 19th, 2011 at 10:14am
I received a text from Marc Ramsay Saturday afternoon that Cool was finishing licking stamps for his Christmas cards and wanted to go caroling, was I in? Of course, having been a member of a Gospel Quartet that had sung extensively around the province, I was surely up for it.. :)

I dug out one of my old quartet outfits, truly gay apparel consisting of black slacks, patented leather black shoes, bright green shirt with Eaton collar, and my favorite Red satin Vest - the one with reindeer and flashing lights  :D .....and of course my Santa hat....

Well I cruised downtown Halifax for an hour or so but never did find the guys, so I asked 3 young ladies standing at the corner of George and Hollis if they wanted to make up a quartet. One of them, who I later learned was named Bambi, told me that would be terribly expensive, but I assured her all the songs are “public domain” and there were no copyright issues.  8-)

They seemed to take great delight in that news, and after telling me they could “reeely ring my bells” - I took that to mean they usually sang with a Salvation Army Band,  we started to sing.. I of course sang bass, Bambi had a nice deep voice (likely because she smoked far too many cigarettes) :-X so she sang Alto. Star and Lucy (spelt with 2 O’s, an S and an E, she told me, amid lots of good natured laughter from the other ladies), both sang a moderate melody.

At one point a young gentleman came along in a very fancy car, you know, one of those big white ones, all shiny and bright, the ones where the hub caps keep spinning after the wheels have stopped - anyway he wanted to know what I was doing with his girls, and I told him I hadn’t realized they were working and when their break was over they could surely go back to their jobs..he seemed ok with that...said the attention might be good for business (?) Darn foremen are everywhere..

A little later, some young boys, flush with the holiday spirit stopped to listen. One of them seemed to know Loosey (her spelling) and was horsing around with her - my back was turned and I didn’t actually see him fall (hadn’t noticed any ice either) but there he was on his knees. She helped him to his feet and once he had his breath back, Tony agreed, after some arm twisting from Loosey to sing with us - turns out he had a fine, surprisingly  high tenor voice. Tony was so taken with the experience the tears positively flowed down his cheeks.. Well as I said, I never did hook up with the guys, but what a fine time - why even the local beat cops stopped by to listen. Over the din of the traffic noise I think one of them asked me if I’d brought fruitcake......what pleasant young men.

Bambi, Star and Loosey (her spelling), it was a great evening, I hope you had fun too. And Tony, who knew you would be a contra soprano.... ;)

Anyway, it was a great start to the Christmas season, and I wish you all a very merry Christmas, and may Santa bring that blade/eflite/motor/turbine..... :D

Sandy,
Perhaps we should call you the flying POET!
I'm betting you didn't memorize all this....
At our ages we do well remembering to put our shoes on in the morning.

Merry Christmas to all

I have a friend with PTSD who once joked after using the loo that as long as he remembered to zip up after he was fine...... my reply was that is is even more important to remember to zip down before.....

Oh dear.

I must say that I know nothing of what you lunatics are referring to.  I have never nor will I ever dress in drag.

Besides, it was Colin's idea.

Well Capt. Cool, now that you mention it, Star did have a round face and heavy "shadow" just like Kelly..... and even tho Loosey left several times by car she was always back pretty fast...sorry Marc, but I thought that blueberry smell was some kind of cologne......not your breath..  :o
