Well, I dug out the Trillium Balsa 1/3 Scale Cub today to start the modernization process - out goes the small servos, cheap Rx and kill switches and the Zenoah G-62. This plane is probably about 20 years old but is still in good condition. Covering is Super Shrink Coverite.

Wingspan: 140 3/4 inches
Weight: 36 pounds

Still looking at potential engines but I may go with the EME 70 Twin if it will fit.

BTW  - CF-KQK was the ID on my Dad's full-scale Piper Cub when I was about 10 years old.

It'll be neat to see the old girl out again Steve.
Don't know why you're taking the G62 off though, but then again I'm an old dinosaur and like them.  Smiley

G-62 may go back in, Glen. The only thing I don't like is that it's hard to start. I will probably add a CH Ignition to solve that issue. The EME 70 is too large - about 1.5" of cylinder head would stick each side of the cowl. The other issue is the cowl itself. It's cut out for the G-62 so I would have to do a lot of work to make it look presentable.

$$$-wise, it makes sense to just add the CH Ignition. This is supposed to be a "cheap" make-over. I have everything else in stock except for the ignition.

You should look at this as well :
http://www.sdshobby.com/engine-fuel-accessories/ignition-system-starter-system/g...

Then you can use the same ignition boxes that come on most engines nowadays.

Great project to resurrect from the closet!  Now I want one of those also...

Starting to look like the planes for next year are going to be big ones.

PS I see you have the body swaying landing technique also...LOL

Grin Grin I'll have you know that is a patented technique to enhance flying a Cub in high wind. It helps tune the wind direction in accordance with the earth's magnetic field and my shaky knees.  Wink Wink

Not really sure who the young guy was ... must have been some loser that was hanging around the field.  Grin

New ignition is on and working. Don't know why the simplest jobs take me soooooo long.

Probably took 1/2 a pound or more off the engine and it should start easily now.

Bought the system from CH Ignitions. They are now the distributor for RCexl so the system included a RCexl ignition box, the pickup you noted above and the new hub for the G-62. Simple system and easy to install - took me longer to find my puller than to do the install  Wink Wink Wink - $75.00.

Apparently, you can get too old to fly a CUB Grin Grin Grin I think it's 20 years plus one day. Lifeflight didn't make it in time. Sad

Nope, think I'll stick to the traditional Cub Yellow with the black lightning bolt. Hoping the G-62 starts easier now.
