The p47 had quite a variation in it's weapons load (intended configuration in pic)
I will be building the rocket tubes as part of that.
Their position on the wing is between the landing gear and the 500 lb. bomb. Weapons hard mounted and interchangeable.
Pics when finished weapons.

Thinking of mounting an auxiliary fuel tank on the belly but;;;;; if a gear up landing is required, bye bye belly pan among other things.........
Possibly high quality velcro mounting would release the fuel tank with minimal or no damage?? Time will bell

My Hurricane will likely have the under wing cannon pods - I was thinking 2 quite short CF pins into sockets in the wing bottom (hard points) then quite strong rare earth magnets to hold - one on pod one on wing.
Would that idea work for your tanks Dan?
Pins hold the tank stable, magnets hold to the belly pan, but tank would slide off

It's certainly possible it could work Sandy.
Still considering options for the belly pan tank.....
Not sure what direction I'll take yet.

Think I'll go with this scheme with full weapons load.
Will have to put the rear view mirror on a spring stem or it's guaranteed break.

I agree with the Yak Man Smiley, although I'm thinking that the real P47 could in fact fly faster than a Spit.  I'll check into that once I'm back home.  27 litres vs 46 litres; 5,500 pounds vs 15,000 pounds....hmmm.

Great choice of paint scheme Dan. I saw the real SNAFU at Duxford and it is truly a thing of beauty.  I'll post a picture once I get home.

Been picking away at my P47.
Started the project early as I will be away some of the winter.

-Strengthened the frame in many locations.
-Got the DLE 61 installed/radio/retracts.
-I painted the wheel covers and wells the colour of yellow oxide.
-The yellow looks a little brighter then it really is due to camera   flash.

-The canopy is now painted the scale colour and mirror finished.
-I won't be gluing down the canopy for awhile.

Yet to be done;
-fabricate rocket tubes 3/8"aluminum tube
-some of the hard points in the wing for the weapon load need   to be finished.
-Triangle stock at various locations for strengthening.
-removing much of the covering to finish in scale "Snafu"
-using invasion stripes as in picks.
-Painting the cowl to scale, not looking forward to that job...
-Adding this line to say Grrrr.... lots of measuring/taping.....
for checker board with it's double tapered cowl.
-Scale graphics as in pics.
-etc,etc.etc.

Will add more pics as I progress

Hey Dan....another warbird taking shape...love it.

Here's a YouTube video that shows more or less the same process that I have used in the past to paint checkerboard patterns on RC and plastic models.  It's a little time consuming, especially when compound curves are involved,....but it works.

Thanks Mike, will try your method.
Re-masked and cleaned up some edges then re- painted the canopy last night.
Some paint got under the tape.

Its moving right along Dan, good stuff.

Yes, paint often gets under the tape.  Its a real PITA.  Generally fairly easy to clean up, but would be better if the paint masks and masking tape sealed down better on the model.

I use a combination of Frog tape and Tamiya Masking Tape.

I use the Tamiya to define the edges (make sure to set it down firmly on the surface) and then I will fill in with Frog Tape since the Tamiya stuff is so expensive.  I get the Tamiya tape from John at Mtme Hobbies.

I'll use plain old blue painters masking tape to stick down the newspaper that I use to cover large surfaces.

I use much the same as Mike does.
Frog tape for precision areas and blue/green standard for masking off large areas.
I will be spraying the cowl with a "light" coat of clearcoat before painting. It helps to seal off the tape edges.

Great job Dan.  The edges look nice and sharp.  Spraying with clear to seal the tape seems to work well; I'll give it a try.

Krylon with satin finish to seal the paint.
If you can't get the Krylon brand clear coat the Rust-Oleum brand works well. The Flat type works well also as it provides a slight gloss finish in spite of it's name.

I also used this to seal the tape edges prior to painting.
The paint used for the checker board was also Krylon brand.
It has the primer already in the paint.
I've used this paint/brand for other projects and have been pleased with it's performance.

Beautiful work on the cowl Dan. The checker board pattern on compound curves is a lot more difficult and tedious than most people think. Great job!!

Finished the rocket tubes last night.
They are made from thin wall aluminium, grouped in 3's and 18" long.
Total length of tubing is 9' .
Their diameter is 1/2 "not 3/8" as I previously posted.
Installed wood dowels inside the tubes at the mounting points to prevent compressing the tubes.

I'm thinking I will have to make some replica rocket tips to close off the front of the tubes.
The airflow into the tubes could cause some issues at higher speeds due to their length.

What were the real rockets? The Brits put rockets under the Hurricane; 6 pound bombs on the end of a long tube. Not very accurate but I guess the effect was nasty  Angry

Thanks for the comments guys.
I have a few corrections/changes to make but other then that it's finished. Shouldn't be a problem identifying it in the air.
Looking forward to flying it!

PS  I was thinking of naming it "Corn Stock" but decided agianst it

Finishing touches;
-Painted 50 cal guns
-drilled dowels to concave shape to form muzzles
-drilled 1/16" holes into the muzzles.
Attached pic more clearly shows this.
Guns not glued in yet.

The shape of the muzzle seems to depend of what photo of the real p47 you look at.
Some show it inverted and others show them as non-inverted
I'm guessing the restored and original aircraft had some differences...

end of the muzzle depends somewhat on what the gun was. Machine gun different from  cannon,  .50 cal, 20mm, Were they all armed the same Dan? I have no idea.

I don't know about the 20mm's but, the P47 50 cal. guns had some upgrades at different times.
That may account for the muzzle variations...

PS How's the Hurricane build and re-build going?

If I intend on flying one aircraft I sometimes don't take my trailer and, transport my aircraft in the van.
This has created some issues with accidental damage (hangar rash) with my warbird wings.
I have been using wing bags but the issue persisted mostly due to the items built onto the wings.

The solution I came up with will hopefully reduce the risk of damage and provide safe/stable/transportation.

As it turns out I took the pictures, that's why you couldn't find them on the web Smiley

Duxford is a wonderful place.  I could spend days there with a camera and a tripod.

Is the rectangular plate for the muffler bolts stock or is this something you made to keep the heads of the bolts visible / accessible? I see possibilities here. Wink

The plate you see under the muffler bolts is provided with the muffler.
It distributes the pressure for tightening and would be handy if you needed the bolts exposed for access.
I think it would be a good solution for your DLE 55RE ......
How's the Dauntless coming along?

Thanks for the info, Dan. You hit the nail on the head - it's the DLE 55RE I was thinking of. This would solve a big problem.

Dauntless is in the final stages. Working on the dive brakes. This would be easy if you were scratch building as you would set up all the linkages before sheeting and covering. Little more difficult now - small holes and big fingers
story of my life
Sad Sad

Still have the fuel system, throttle servo and exhaust to deal with but it's starting to look like a real plane. Having a hard time getting a decent picture due to the size - I can't get far enough away to fit it all in. I'll try and post a video of the dive brakes in operation soon.

Took a picture of it warming up for it's first flight.
Thought I would share it here.

Congrats, Dan.  Your plane looks great.  Would be interested in reading your comments on how it flew?

The maiden flight was stable and predictable with no trim required.
It seems the DL 61 is the ideal engine for this P47.
Prop size 23-10
Had a little trouble with the engine choke but got that sorted.
Once the glide path was set for landing it almost brought itself in for the landing.
Very pleased,very pilot friendly!

Have just started building a 60 size Top Flite kit.  Hope that it will look (and fly) as good as your model.
