cannot say for sure brian, but if an esc is rated for six cells, I can't see programming burning it out.  six cell components would still be six cell components.

however, reversed polarity on the battery leads sure would.  Fast!  and the battery would get hot hot!  check your polarity carefully before plugging in the new one.

and yes, with futaba, you always have to reverse the throttle srtting.
