So, a discussion about portable generators. I know everyone has been going nuts for the small honda 1000w generator because it's quiet. But at $1000, it's a tough pill to swallow.

So I started doing some searching, and found hyundai power equipment has a 2000w portable for only $500 at wal mart. Reading the specs, everything is better power wise (of course) but the DB level is 65, where as the honda is 57.

My wonder is, would that be enough of an increase to warrent not bringing it to the field? I can't see 8db making that much of a difference, especially if left over by the vehicles. Just seems like such a good deal not to jump on.

Thoughts?

Hi Greg,

I bought one last year at canadian tire for 200 bucks!

It's great for the cottage and charging batteries.  Keep it in the back of the truck...runs for 5 hours on the small tank.

For 500$ cheaper, I'd just get a good extension cord and place it behind the shed or some distance out so it doesn't bother anyone. Then smile every time you think about the money you didn't spend. Cheesy

Gauging Sound
Based on general practice, people perceive increases in sound exposure in the following ways:
> 3dB to < 5dB is considered a just noticeable difference
> 5dB to < 10dB is considered marginally significant
> 10dB is considered significant [perceived as doubling (halving) of sound exposure]
55 dBA is the average sound measurement for road traffic.

quick calc shows that a 500$ hyundai on the end of a 15 foot cord is equivalent to a 57bd 1000$ Honda

Keep in mind that it weighs 70 lbs dry...that is a hefty chunk of generator.

I bought a 2000w Honda and it is fantastic.  I figured since I am going all electric from here on out, it was worth the extra $ as it will be a very long term investment.  I bought it off of Kijiji from a dealer for the same price as the local dealers were selling the 1000w Honda's.

But for 500$.....it is very tempting.

Well, I went to have a look, and boy oh boy was it heavy. So me and dad did a little shopping around, and princess auto had a nice little 1000w portable, 65db, for 199!!! So needless to say, there's a new generator in the back of the truck. Thanks dad!

1000w for 200$...that is almost impossible to pass up!  Good deal.  Now with the 800$ you saved you could put that towards extension cords and leave the genny in the next county.   Grin

Hi Greg:  What is the DB Rating for that generator?  Is it a generator/inverter also?

Thanks Bruce
