Hey Guys,

As some of you know, I've been planning a 30cc electric conversion, well, all the pieces are in place finally, and I hope to have it ready to maiden this weekend. Here's a pic of the Hacker A50-14L that finally came in. I'll have install pics later on.

Hi Greg,

Very Cool!

I'm actually thinking the same thing with a 50cc plane...just trying to justify the cost of the batteries!

Hi Greg,

small question...

Isn't the 50 a bit big for a 30cc size?

When i go look at the recommended motor for the electric conversion of my Hangar 9Extra 260, it is recommending the e-flite 160....I have a 50cc engine in the plane now, so i'm just wondering....

Brian

are going to maiden on Friday?

Brian,

The A50 is the recommended motor for a 30cc 3d conversion. It will swing a 19" prop, which is on par with a dl30. Should be looking just shy of 2000 w.

Hi Greg,

It's all very interesting to me...

If you do the umber though, say a dl50 is 5.5 Hp....that works out to 4125 watts.

Th forums are recommending an A60-16l hacker, but this motor only pulls 3500 watts....and from all accounts it has gobs of power for a 50cc size plane.

So, what t do?....

Brian, truthfully, I just researched what seemed to be working for ppl already. My biggest question with the set-up was weather to go 6S or 8S. I ended up with 8S for increased voltage, and lower amperage. But producing the same power. Now I have batteries that can be used for other things if I want.

If it were me, I would find the more popular 50cc set-up, and if it seems to be working for people, go with it. I started over thinking the conversion at first, then just said frigg it, and ordered a combo. And it seems to be working out all right.

lol...yup, it's the old brute force and ignorance approach...lol

Works every time!

I'm leaning towards the Hacker A60-16l as most people agree it is a great motor.

Thinking of putting it in the 88" Yak i bought from Mark.

by the way, are you using a seperate receiver pack?

I did yes. I use life packs and like the servo performance better at the higher voltage than a bec can provide. I simply ran it through a miracle on off switch. Works well.

Greg
its the powerplant you need to consider
engine plus propeller
You need to calculate the thrust, based on prop, rpm and required torque/bhp
at 6000 rpm with a 19x8 APC you get 13.4 lb of static thrust.

when flying
T*V/550=bhp
select a thrust and use a drag coefficient of about .3
D=1/2. rho. V^2. S. Cd = T
at 45mph
V=66fps
V^2=4356
rho apprxs to 2/29^2 = .002378 at 59degF S/L ISA
S= wing plan area ; say 5 ft^2
so the drag is 7.8 lbf =thrust for steady flight is .94 bhp

I am not sure what the Cd of your plane is
it could be as high as .4 because of the Reynolds number you are flying at

The prop will not develop 13.8 lbf of thrust at that speed

I just maidened my 3D hobbyshop Edge 540 74" electric in Margaree last week.

This is my setup:
6S Hacker A5012L
Castle ICE-100
Castle Creations BEC Pro
Xoar PJM-E 20x10 Prop
Turnigy nano-tech 6000mah 6S 25~50C Lipo Pack

I haven't pushed the plane very hard yet as I am breaking the packs in.  But it flys great and I am getting at least 7 min flights with power to spare.

Plane weighs about 10.5 to 11 pounds and we calculated the thrust using the 7 in 1 HK meter to somewhere around 21 pounds swinging the 21x10 at 6600 RPM.

In retrospect it might have made more sense to use a Life pack rather than the bec because I had to add about 100 grams to the nose to balance the aircraft.

Also 8S would probably have been a good choice but I felt 6S was a simpler option for me and I saw youtube videos of the 6S setup and was impressed with the flying time and characteristics of the plane on that setup.

ummmmm, waverider, it's a model airplane with a proven power system.......

Ben, I was thinking 6S at first myself, but Then I decided on 8S packs for the simple fact that I can use 2 smaller 4S packs, 3850 is what I decided on. I figured I can use the 4S packs in smaller planes if I want. I'm happy with my decision. God I hope the weather holds off this weekend. Angry

PS, if anyone has a fish scale, could you bring it to the field so i can weigh my plane?

One benefit of me going with 6S is I am already looking going to a 50cc airframe for next year.  Recommended setup is 12S  Grin running the Hacker A60-18L Brushless Motor

3D HobbyShop 87" Extra SHP not sure if it will fit in the car though  Grin

I don't think turbines will go the way of the do do bird like glow engines currently going.  Part of the attraction of turbines, atleast for me, is the whole experience....the smell, the flames at startup, the sound and the realism.  You don't get that with EDF.  While EDF's are definately easy and convenient, their will always be a place for turbines imho.

In 10 years, the only guys running glow engines will be doing so just for nostalgia purposes.  I also predict that glow fuel will be the final nail in the coffin as the price will climb as fewer and fewer guys will be buying fuel.  Most of the new guys at my field (less than 2 years experience) are going all electric from the get go and not even bothering with glow.  I, myself, am going all electric from here on out.  Just picked up a 800w charger, 800 watt power supply and a 2000w honda generator.
