Bring the cowl tomorrow. I can meet you during the day. And as Sandy said, I think you should take me up on the Repair Joe's plane offer. I'm sure one rainy day and a case of beer and we'll make short work of it.

Fair enough.I will bring the cowl tomorrow and we can look at the rest of it when everyone has time. Al seems game to have a look as well. The wing needs surgery and the engine box is a jigsaw puzzle. I have another cowl on the way, if you think you can match the paint scheme. It is currently the wrong color. Tom at wild hare had a very trying year and does not have many parts on hand and NO planes at all. I will be looking at repairing what I can on the fuse during the week.

When I had to repair mine (damaged like yours), I went to NAPA and had them  match the colors and mixed into spray cans.  It was a little pricey. I spent about $60 fixing mine I think.  I am glad to see you are going to rebuild and cudos to Mike & Al for offering to help you with it!!!

On second thought take the cowl into Cdn tire with you and you may just get lucky, somtimes the automotive touch up spray cans are the colors we need. Make sure you pick up a can of primer for whatever paint you decide to go with as well. I believe mine was lacquer.

A good place to start in terms of color matching is to find out what the monocote colors are and if we can simply buy the spray bombs that monocote makes to match their covering. I have the cowl in my hands and it is not bad. Can't wait to get the bondo out and have at it.

Good decision on un-ordering that cowl. I will make short work of repairing this one. Just get me those monocote numbers.

Hey Joe. This might help. If the plane was covered in Ultracote, then here is the color guide for Ultracote. I also have it for Monocote. We should be able to get the spray bombs to match your colors. Keep in mind that Ultracote is a Hanger 9 product and Monocote , a Top Flite product.

Okay...I will have a look at it with the laptop next to the plane, but from what I can see here...and go from my poor memory. I would say midnite blue. The other blues do not look dark enough to me. Also it is Ultracote Orange 100%. He told me that much.

More like prepping a derby car for it's next entry Wink

Could be worse. Another few feet and I would have had to bond the crapper.  Cheesy

Will do Harold.

Whitey. Going by the Hanger 9 website and what Tom at Wild Hare told me, near as I can figure, it is Ultacote Orange and Midnight Blue.

Close enough for Rock n Roll.

Either way, it will look better than it does now.

I will call John and see if he has the spray bombs.

Hey Joe. Glass work is done on the cowl. Bondo is on and mount ring is repaired. Just need to sand and prime. Any luck on the blue and orange paint? Attached a few photos to show progress.

Hey Mike. Looks great! Thanks. I will hopefully be up and around tomorrow. I will head down to John's and see what paint he has. Hoping I will not need to special order it. Down with what appears to be vertigo, hoping the symptoms will subside by tomorrow.  Sad

Have no scrap covering. I have done the match as close as possible online, on the Ultracote site. John and I are on it. Wink

Tempted to leave the cowl as is, then I will not worry about scraping it. More fun flying when you don't give a crap!!  Cheesy

I wouldn't leave the cowl as is, as I have wet sanded most of the paint off it and if you leave it, it will look like my first car.....a 74 Dodge Duster. I may have some white and I may have some primer. I'll donate them to the cause. Al said he might have some blue.

everyone makes fun of me for how long it takes to get a plane done, JoeDi has it made.. He wrecks his plane, whines on and on about how the engine was crap, and gets everyone else to rebuild the darn thing for him..... Cool

That's almost as bad as some idjit getting a bunch of good ole boys to basically BUILD a new plane, NIB,  at Margaree on the pretense it was a little wet out!!!!!! Now who the he** was THAT character... Angry

True that. Trust me, if I had the know how and the tools, I would do it myself. I sadly have neither. Al is busy for the next while, so I will get LOTS of yard work done.  Wink

Should see you guys out there mid May and then I am gone for a couple of weeks and back in June. Might even make Margaree this year again. Should be around for most of the summer. As, it appears now.  Lips Sealed

PS- Not near as bad as the idjit  Cheesy

A dog's age ago, a buddy was at my place doing something or another, and got CA all over his hands (early days of the stuff and we didn't have the awareness we do now).....
he put his hands in his pockets!! Grin Grin

Aside from the burns it took most of a bottle of nail polish remover to get said hands from said pockets  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy - he was begging me to take an X-acto knife and just remove chunks of pant... Shocked

Okay, so I began the repairs on my own. For better or worse. Here is the progress.

Whitey has the cowl ready for painting. No rush on that, as here is my start.

It is going a little slow, as I am using 30 minute epoxy on anything that needs serious strength (former repair).

I started by pulling away the covering on the smashed part of the fuse. I then pulled everything back into place, as much as I could. and wicking in thin CA.

To strengthen things up, I am patching with contest balsa from the inside. Once I have the balsa patch in place, I once again soak the balsa patch with thin CA to harden and strengthen it. Seems to work okay.

Digging a little deeper, I found yet another mangled former. As this one was really weakened, I hit it with CA to hold it in place and laminated a very thin piece of light ply to it on either side, using 30 minute epoxy. As shown here.

At this point the fuse is clamped allowing more 30 minute epoxy to set up on a broken cross brace. I have a few more formers to laminate and the side to smooth out with epoxy and beads (like a brown powder)? I have some but have never used it. What is the correct mixture of beads, epoxy and hardener?

so far things are looking pretty good Joe, doing it rite....

as for the beady stuff.... epoxy is still 50/50, then add the bead till the mixture is "powdery" - now thats a big help isn't it.... the more powder, the weaker the glue but the easier the sand, so if its not a structural joint then pwder it up good...

now the experts (xspurts) can have a go at my comments and tell you what they think...

Thanks Mark...and ummmm Sandy I think Wink

I kind of enjoy it in one sense, but it takes me a long time to do stuff. Don't have the right tools for some and unsure of what I am doing with other things. Although, I am leaving the stuff like the motor box for the "xspurts" to do with me. I have an idea, but am not thrilled with the idea of having a 30cc with a 19" prop flying at me when I first start it.  Cheesy

The wing is a whole other issue. Have not even really looked at that yet. Saving that until I have the fuse sorted out.

I started to "try" to repair the motor box last night...that was a mistake. Angry

I did however repair the remaining severed formers. I will sand those off tonight and sand the side of the fuse. I think I am just going to fill the small depressions in the fuse with spackle to smooth them out.

Planning to have a look at the wing on the weekend. Not sure what I may be able to tackle on that.

Okay...so the fuse is now puttied up and seems solid once again. I will sand it tomorrow night and apply more putty if needed.

After that I tackled the horizontal stab that appeared to be weakened. I managed to peel back the covering without harming it. (Love Untracote)

There was indeed a cracked and stressed point right near the counter weighted area. Repaired, and made sturdy with CA and contest balsa. I would say less than a gram added and very strong.

Tomorrow, I will have a look at the wing. Not looking forward to that one. I suspect it will be a little more complicated.  Huh

Okay, so tonight I completed the internal patches on the fuse and sanded the wood putty , so aside from covering the fuselage repair is complete.

I got ambitious and pulled the covering back on the wing, carefully so as not to rip it. What I discovered inside, is a little beyond my repair skill.

Al, your up  Wink

I once again would like to thank DLE for their part in this repair, and of course for the rock hard CA fingertips.  Angry

Tempting Wink

Dave. Will not be ready for the weekend sadly. I am headed to Ontario the following weekend for two weeks. Hope to get it finished when I return.

In the interim, I have resumed my previous hobby of BBQing and drinking.
