I'm curious too.  A friend of mine has this one in the box.... and we are concerned over a few apparent quality issues.. Would like to hear anything you have to say about this plane..  What servos are you using?

Hi Guys
We have had some of the smaller spitfires.
60 to 90size.
The Hanger 9 Spit that I have now has two steel rods inside two plastic nyrods. Seems to be solid.
If I remember correctly I use to make two 1/4 " balsa runners with short pieces of nyrod  tied with thread and piano wire with nylinks through them. You can buy rod  3 feet with a thread on them.
The sytem I used the most over the years was a Dave Brown rod with 1/4" gates  in the Fuse.
It comes with a y exit and a singe hole entry fitting. It is a 1/4"round composite material.
On the bigger planes  you need a good solid system.
This is why you see a lot of elevators with two servos in the tail end.
The pull pull system is great.
Dubro have a kit 4 40 and 2 56 size that I have for a number of years on all my rudders. These are flexible wires with a plastic coating on them .

- The elevator wires are too small (gauge). Relaced with Dubro heavy duty plastic coated steel wires.

-Servos used; Hitec 5645 (168 in.oz) and 5625 (130in. oz)
steel gear servos.

-Many of the hinge holes were misaligned, vertically and horizontally. Had to re-drill.

-Had to make a new elevator half (badly warped) My wife and me had to tap the wing together a few millimeters at a time, using a lot of talk powder. It took almost an hour. I now leave them together (one piece) as they will not seperate without damage. Don't want to go through that again!!!!!

-Poorly fitting formers (gaps) filled with epoxy.

I'm not suggesting all ESM kits are like this, just mine.
After all is said and done, it flies great and looks good.
Would I buy another ESM??? Not sure.... Mine may have been made on a Monday.

ok Dan, please get specific with the stab wires.....you replaced with Dubro heavy duty wire - how did you fit/attach at either end..

Capt Cool suggested 2/56 rod with solder ball links, and this sounds like a great idea, but what I can find is too short....I need another 6 or 8 inches (shup Glen). The 3 foot stuff Grant spoke of would be ideal, but wher do I get it..

I'm paranoid about this elevator set up - the thin wire ESM put in the box is a no-go furr shurr..

I use ball links throughout the entire aircraft.
For the tailplane, I hooked up the wires using 4:40 ball links on the elevator tiller arm, and the threaded coupler you would use to hook up your rudder at the servo.

Basically, it's a rigging coupler that has a hole in it to pass the wire through, but I used three (3) brass crimps per connection and thin CA on them as well.
I had no problems so far with this setup and I don't anticipate any using this method.
My main concern on the wires was the small size that was supplied with the kit.

Hope this helps...

PS; I was very unsure of the elevator setup when I first saw it but, after much research,it appears to be a good design for aircraft that need a lot of nose weight to balance.
time will tell

Dan,

Thanks for the response.

We are noticing the same thing, tight fitting wings and misaligned hinges!  Replacing with Robart's as well because the supplied are just too flimsy.

Regards,

Shane

Hi Guys

Glad  I read this . I almost sent for this Spit.
I've been scaling up one of my smaller spitfires but it looks like it won't be this year's project.
I have used Great Planes rods.
Great Planes
GPMQ3716   .074   36 "
GPMQ3718   .095   48"
I believe one is 2/56 and the other is 4/40 size

Read your post, went out to the vault and had a look and guess what?
I just happen to have three sets of GP #3716 laying around doing nothing, so if you don't want to wait for a set to arrive you can pick up a set and replace it when the other gets here.
That way you won't be held up building the Hurri.
Plus you can see my new super D-duper top secret project that I'm starting  Wink

Yes, once I finish buffing the drool marks off of it and get the last two or three item's I want to finish it off. Smiley
Get those rod's in and move on to the next step so we can park them beside each other come test flying season.
