well, suppose a Hakin' Yak is better than nothing.... Cheesy

I have a bunch of Hitec 5645MG's in my 50CC SBach. For my abilities, and for IMAC, they work just fine...
might not be what you want for 3D, but I don't do that so doesn't matter to me...
do a cost comparison...
AND, I'm sure Capt. Cool and THE OTHER GUYS will have lots of reasons why my servos are not up to snuff  Cool

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your input....i guess Roll Eyes

I think i'm up to snuff as you put it, i fly pretty hard 3d stuff and really like doing full throw tumbling.

So, i think i need servos that have the speed to react very quickly.  You can always tone the rates down...

Hi Brian:
I know exactly what your going through in the decision process for Servos.  It seems there is a big, BIG difference in power and price when going from a .60 size or 30 CC size engine/aircraft to a 55cc engine/plane.  I was looking at the Savox 1273TG and 1270TG, but they were never in stock over the last 5 months!!  I eventually purchased the Futaba BLS156HV for all the control surfaces.  Depending on who you talk to, the Hitecs appear to have centering issues.  As far as the speeds, even high torque servos are so ridiculously fast that it probably isn't a issue.  So that boils it down to a servo with good centering and enough torque to handle your control surfaces.  Best people to talk to are those who fly IMAC and do 3D, like Al Coolen,Colin Bell and Mark Ramsey.  Thats where I got my info.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the info!

What it is coming down to for me is the speed of the servos.  Torque is easy because the manual tells you what you need... Cheesy

In smaller 3D planes we are always looking for the fastest servos we can find, but i suspect that with a 50cc size plane it must somewhat rely on the rate at which the control surface can be moved.  In other words, i am wondering if there is an end point here.  A large control surface can probable only be moved so fast, like under 0.1 seconds.

Do larger planes need this speed?

Brian, somewhere I read an article by Glizellis  (yes gang I CAN and DO read) that with the new radios, transit time is far faster than anything we mortal humans can initiate. What holds servo movement up is not the servo itself,  but the servo waiting to find out where the thumb on the stick is moving.
As you said, the instructions tell you the torque required, and any good digital servo is already faster than you can move....
With an airplane I doubt you'll notice the difference between a $100 servo and a $300 servo... and here I hang my head waiting for the torrent of abuse that comment will elicit  Cheesy

From my experience, where servo speed comes into play with the big aerobatic stuff, imho, is when you are doing any type of snap roll or fast rolling maneuver.  To do a proper IMAC style snap roll (that is a whole other topic of debate), there is a technique to getting a proper snap...having servos that are strong and fast enough to react quickly and consistently make it much much easier.  Same goes for rolling maneuvers...lets say you have a downline with 2 consecutive half rolls...i find it presents better and looks cleaner if the roll starts and stops quickly and precisely every time.  Any fast rolling maneuvers like rolling loops or low alpha harrier rolls feel more connected with a faster servo.

My old 40% 260 that I sold to Al always did a great snap roll with 1000 oz-in torque on each aileron.  That was with 3 Hitec 7955's per aileron at 6.5 volts.  To save weight, I tried dropping it down to 2 servos for 666 oz-in of torque and it would not snap roll.  The first 90 degrees of the snap would be as slow as death until the ailerons had time to deflect properly.  I went back to 3 servos per aileron and the difference was night and day.

A seasoned pilot (and by seasoned, i don't mean old....Sandy... Cheesy) would be able to tell the difference between a 40$ servo and a 100$ servo in the air on an an IMAC ship.  I know myself, I wouldn't put anything less than a 7995 on anything 50cc or larger for performance and longevity reasons.

Like so many things in this wonderful hobby...it usually boils down to "wants" and not "needs".  lol.  It will fly fine with a 40 or 50$ metal gear servo...but what do you want for performance?

Hi Guys
Some really good comments here.
Servos are very important . You don,t have to have the best on the market and you don,t want to buy the cheapest.
Year ago I kept breaking my tramsmitter Sticks .I use to get a lot of comments that I was too hard on my gear. It was a long time realizing that I couldn,t make the plane due what I wanted.
I have some servos in the 60 dollar range. They are good, but when you get a few hundred flights on them the centering is gone and a lot of slop in them.
I don,t fly the big stuff yet, I keep around 80 " Span and I am using about 130oz  torque servos.I think speed of the servo depends on your fingers and how you want to fly

A well trimed aircraft is just as important as a good set of servos. You also have to realized that some of these servos are gettig up there in weight 2 to 3 oz per unit.I know that doesn,t matter to alot, but when you start adding weight to a plane it will not handle like a lighter plane.Light is good heavy is bad.  If you want to find out how good your system responds due knife edge flight both ways.
Then due a knife edge loop. That will will tell you if you got enough speed and torque.Make sure your knees are not shaking when you do this. Don,t ask me how I know this.

There are always different ways to do things in the hobby.
There is always something new to learn and see.
The most important thing to remember is to have fun whatever you do and come to the field and ask questions
from the guys .

Whew, at least in my comments I kept the discussion ABOVE $100 servos.

But to clarify - I am well seasoned.... lots of salt and pepper, and way too much garlic for Capt. Cool.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the great info! I really appreciate it!

Here's the way i see it now:

Hites 7955tg-

torque @ 6v- 333 in/oz, 24 kg
speed @ 6v - 0.15 sec
cost - $120 GH, $93 HK (plus shipping)
Weight - 65 G

Savox 1256-

Torque @ 6v - 277 oz/in
Speed @ 6v - 0.15 sec @60 deg
Cast - $88 GH
Weight - 52g

so, what to do?..... Undecided

I think the manual for the Yak recommends 180 oz/in, so both of these are overkill.....overkill being a good thing! Cheesy

I'm leaning towards the Savox servos to save the 13g / servo.....

I could get the 7955's from Hobby king but then have to pay shipping.....

Looking for informed opinions between these two.....

Anyone out there got experience with bith?

How about their centering/ etc?

Still undecided...... Undecided

Brian

Hi Brian
I know that this is more expensive but I am a Futaba Man.This is probably what I will go with in my 50cc setup. They are 149 Dollars at Tower Hobbies. If you buy more than 1, you get a small reduction.
I would check with John at Martime Hobbies before ordering online.

This is the Futaba BLS351 Brushless Digital High Torque Metal Gear Servo.
Designed for any RC hobby application.

This servo can produce high-current draw from your batteries.
If using NiMH or LiPo batteries, make sure they are capable
                         of delivering sufficient amps.

Features: Equipped with a Brushless motor that lasts longer and operates at a
            lower temperature than Brushed motors
Samarium Cobalt magnets and dual ball bearings
30% faster response times, smoother operation.
Same power consumption and centering as Digital servos equipped with
          Brushed motors
          Standard size
          Metal gears
          One-year warranty

includes: Futaba BLS351 Brushless Digital Servo with universal
            connector, 0.83" (21mm) diameter round horn pre-mounted
          1.7" (44mm) long 3-point horn
          Servo mounting hardware

Requires: Installing in model and plugging into receiver

Spec:    Torque: 4.8V: 173 oz-in, 6.0V: 217 oz-in
          Speed: 4.8V: 0.16 sec, 6.0V 0.13 sec
          Dimensions: 1.6 x 0.8 x 1.5" (40 x 20 x 37mm)
          Weight: 2.2 oz (63g)

If you look at the listing on Tower they also have Ditigal Servos.
I believe the 251 is 119 Dollars.
You can bring up  the servos on Tower Hobbies and click on Teck notes to get the information about the servo and  all the prices.
