After long deliberation, I finally hit the "buy" button and ordered this for a winter project. 95" wingspan should be big enough for my old eyes to see. A couple of DLE-20's and retracts should complete the setup. Smiley

Thanks, guys. I'm really looking forward to this project.

I do find it ironic that working all those extra hours and weekends that kept me from doing any flying this year resulted in a bonus cheque that is being partially used to fund this project. Wink

Tried ARFPRO's first, Glen. Sent them a few emails but got no response at all. Only problem with TRM is this is my first order with them. They require some additional ID confirmation for your first order if you are are not located in the US. I have everything sent to them and they have confirmed the orders - even broke then down so shipping would be the cheapest. Just have to patiently wait for some BIG boxes now...

Ordered two DLE-20's and the electric retracts. The Generation 1 retracts are a bit slow (40 - 60 seconds to open or close but the G2 Upgrade due out in the Spring will speed them up to around 10 seconds which should look nice. Best part - no air leaks!

Didn't really think this out too well though - I have numerous scale "cockpits" to work on - cockpit, nose gunner, upper turret etc. Angry There goes the winter, I guess.

Thanks, Dan. Looking forward to it although I haven't flown a tricycle gear plane for around 20 years. Wink Wink Order should be shippped from TBM in the morning since they have everything in stock (unlike a "local" supplier who only had 4 out 13 items in stock from an order I placed last night Angry).

Hmmmm, let see...

Estimated delivery time - one week
TBM estimated construction time - 40-50 hours
ESM factor - 40-50 hours Wink
Main cockpit, upper turret, rear turret, nose section - ????

Total = see you at the field in 2014  Cheesy Wink Cheesy

Man thats a cool plane Steve! Was on  my list but I'm way too poor now Undecided Grin
Looking forward to seeing it when it comes in.

Do you think 40 to 50 hours is enough time for the ESM factor. Grin

The kit finally arrived last night after visiting Quebec twice and then doing a tour of every state on the east coast (thanks very much, UPS  Angry). Extremely well packed and arrived with no damage.

So far, the kit looks good. Been going through the manual and the parts identifying everything and checking the fit of parts. Only big issue I've noted is that the wing tubes are way too tight - need some work here. I know this comes as a big shock to the guys that have built an ESM kit before. Wink Wink

I should have the retracts and TwinSync tomorrow with some engines and servos arriving next week. Still need to order two props, two prop nuts, two pilots, receiver .......

Geez, it's easy to spend money in this hobby. Grin Grin Grin

Wing tubes too tight!!!!!!! No way Steve.....can't be, not with ESM. Well, chuck it in a lathe and use some 80 grit paper - that'll fix it, and your lungs too....

Well, I'd like to say I'm slaving away building my new plane but, since my motors and servos won't arrive until late this week, I decided to take a break and head to Las Vegas - sitting in Caesar's Palace right now thinking about heading to Planet Hollywood and the Pleasure Pit for a brew. Actually, it's only because of my extreme degree of dedication to the NS traveling public that I even agree to come to this convention and try to learn new ways to increase the safety on our roads for our citizens. Wink Wink

I HAVE been working on the plane - retracts are in and working, all hinging is done and I have glued a couple of louvers to the wings. Pictures when I get back.

Bomber is coming along ever so slowly. Getting down to a shorter list of things to complete. Next task is to get the electronics hooked up for the engines and bolt them in. Belly pan needs to be mounted after the battery tray is secured - still thinking about this.

No cockpits this summer - running out of time.  Wink Three-bladed props are just for show right now - break in will be done with a couple of two-bladed wood props .

Things I have learned:
1) working with an ESM product feels about the same as shoving bamboo shoots under your fingernails - several club members may disagree  Wink
2) two engines are exactly twice the problems but three times the work
3) no matter how big a plane you are building, it is a guarantee that there will be at least one area where you cannot get your hand.
4) did I mention I don't like ESM?
5) I am so glad I started making my own servo leads several years ago ($$$$$)
6) cell phones take crappy pictures
7) ESM is ... oh yeah, I already mentioned them, didn't I?

She's looking Beautiful, I can't wait to hear those two engines syncing up. Are you setting a date for the maiden ? I'll be sure to bring a camera.
I don't think you'll find anybody here that will disagree with you about ESM\KMP kits.

WOW!! That looks cool. I remember getting up onside a B-25 at an air show when I was a young teen. Tighter than one would think for a fair size plane. Perhaps that is part of the issue getting your big paws in there Wink

Well, as some know, the B-25 made it to an actual flying field on August 4th and they can attest that it actually exists ( Hurricanes on the other hand.... Cheesy Wink).

Had the engines running (ooooh, the sound of two engines was great), made multiple tweeks and worked out some minor problems. Just before getting the guts up to actually try a take-off, three of the eleven Power HD 1501 servos on board decided to fail at the same time - two flaps and one elevator). Angry Angry Angry

Tested one of the failed servos on the bench and it started to catch fire right before my eyes - very impressive. Angry All servos have now been pulled from the plane. Replacement servos have been ordered but it may be a few weeks before delivery.

Oh well, it was a start and I learned a few important things about the plane in the process. 1) Damn plane won't slow down on asphalt (think I'll like grass better Grin) and 2) with one engine out, I will have to just put the other at idle and leave it there and land. Smiley Smiley

SC-0253MG. They have metal gears, are digital and have a torque of 83.3 @ 6.0 volts. Designed for 30cc planes but they will work well on the B-25 - control surfaces are actually quite small. Biggest surface would be the flaps and I will have one servo to each of the four sections.

Hopefully they are not self-igniting like the Power HD's. Grin Grin

You are right about that, Sandy. I think I've figured out what happened - after sitting in an ESM fuse for a few months, they caught the ESM virus. Grin

well that's a real possibility Steve - often thought the things were full of contagion.....so my take on ESM is

they start as SNAFU

move on to FUBAR

progress to TLAR

but always just fall a tad short of the stage of   T.F. Bundy

the maiden will happen once the spring mud dries up. I may bring it down though to run some more fuel through the engines. if all goes as it usually does, the actual maiden will be unplanned - if it feels right, I'll take off. Smiley Smiley

The B-25 flies!!! On Saturday, after a bit of gentle coaxing (yeah, right) and a few hiccups (what do you mean - I have to fuel this thing up?), with Mr. Coolen at the controls, the B-25 had her maiden flight. Despite a serious trim problem (who knew a 95" B-25 could do a loop? Roll Eyes), Al handled it well, got things under control and made some beautiful low passes down the runway.

After a few tweaks, a second flight ensued and I even flew it for a few minutes. The plane flies much better than I anticipated  Grin Grin Grin - didn't even need the Depends diapers. Wink I LIKE IT!

Well, since I'm a sucker for punishment and since I just happen to have some B-25 retracts, 2 x 20cc gas engines, a couple of B-25 cockpits and a bunch of servos laying around, I've ordered another ESM B-25 (with a nice offer from TBM to help pay for it).

Lots of planning going into how to strengthen the center wing (can you say "carbon fibre wing tubes"?). The first one flew well and should have had many more flights on it. This one hopefully won't take two years to get to the field.

In my defense on the last one, I was ready to bring it to the field many, many times but I kept hearing forecasts that said a hurricane was due to show up at the Avon field and I didn't want to fly in the wind so I stayed home. Sadly, the forecast of a hurricane was just a myth predicated by an evil troll that is known to hang around the poop palace and it never showed up. Grin Grin Grin

Now, although the next B-25 is not scheduled to arrive until mid-November, I must get myself into the ESM building frame of mind ... Hmmm, just where did I hide that big bottle of rum? Wink

oh yeah????  Angry Grin  Actually i thought you of all people would sympathize, Steve  Violin Whine....it's the "ESM frame of mind" that's a myth, perpetuated by evil Chinese kit designers who plan to take over the Western world by beating our collective brain power into a porridge-like mush by intermixing benign terms like "ARF"  Smiley with corrupting, mind numbing, evilsadomasichismic (ESM get it ?) promises of ..... Naaah Bye Bye excited   Beating A Dead Horse Beating A Dead Horse Beating A Dead Horse

ahem......on a lighter note, we are getting into hurricane season, and once the engine gods deliver the promised new "big block" we should be pretty close to starting to get things almost ready to look at finishing the project - maybe by the time B25 x 2 is in the air  Not Listening

Well, being the incredibly patient guy I am, I waited and waited and waited (since August) for the replacement B-25 to arrive from Troy Build Models ... terrible customer service. They kept moving the delivery date and never once initiated the notification. I always had to go to them. I finally gave up and cancelled the order on the weekend. I would definitely
not recommend
Troy Built Models. Angry Angry

I had also ordered a set of 4.5" wheels/brakes for the B-25 from Robarts in November. No contact for a month until I emailed them. I was told they would be shipped the end of January. No contact from them so I emailed them mid-February - no response. After waiting until the past weekend with no response, I cancelled the order. I would definitely
not recommend
buying direct from Robarts.
Angry Angry

What's going on with this hobby and customer service??? Angry Angry

It's not all bad though. Found a slight problem with one of the stabs on my jet on Saturday. Emailed the dealer in the afternoon - had a reply from Altecare with 1 hour. They had forwarded my email to the manufacturer and we would see what they recommended. Early Monday morning, I had a reply from Aviation Design apologizing for the defect, directions on how I could fix or an offer for them to fix the problem or they would replace both stabs no charge. I would definitely
recommend
Altecare and Aviation Design. Smiley Smiley

Guess this means I have to drag the F-7F back onto the building table (I think I've set a record for the world's longest build).

That sucks Steve..... both Troy Built and Robart would definately go on my Nay Nay list (crap I'm going to miss John Pinette)....

I do have to buy robart tho because I need some bleed valve needles from the main valve (who knew you had to loktite those too!!)..

On the other hand, that F-7F is one sweet plane (
even if you did start it back when the real one was flying
..between you and me, we make a pretty slow pair..... Cheers

Know what you mean, Sandy. Robarts does have some good stuff. I'll buy from dealers if its in stock. No backorderers though.

Hi Steve:

Should be a great plane.

Don't let any of these guys fly it, they might forget to put those great wheels down.

See you when it is dry and warm out.
