Title: PZL P.11c
Post by yorcram on Jul 11th, 2020 at 4:17pm
I wanted something a little different to build. Had to be fixed gear and fit a 20cc gas .
Found plans for the PZL P11 on Outer Zone. It was smaller than I wanted so had to enlarged them. They didn't look too clear but thought they would be ok. I decided on 20% so took the file to kwik kopy. The plans are low res. Lots of the text on the plans are unreadable, but the outline and formers looked ok. A quick measurment shows about a 64in ws. Laying out the engine shows dle20cc a little too big. So going to use my evolution 15cc instead.

As each wing has 3 sections and a 3 piece spare, I chose to tackle that first. Measuring ribs and spar position shows a variation on the middle section ( could be from the low res and my chosen reference points) so that had to be compensated for.

It was time to start cutting.

Started assembly of the first wing outer section. Ribs were glued to the outer spar. The middle and inner rib sections were left floating to allow for adjustments.
Assembling the wing panels shows the first big mistake. The inner spar was glued to the top of the middle spar instead of the bottom of mid spar.   :-[
First pic shows the spars laid out and I have them out of position.  :'(

Had to cut out the spar and build a new one. Building the rest went better. I also managed to line up the two wing spars fairly well,

The fuse was started as I would need this to be able to work on wing center section.
Plans call for stringers but I am going to sheet it to match full size. This meant some changes to the build.
I made a box structure and added formers. Then it was time to start sheeting.

Added anchor points for the struts and some landing gear block.
With the planking far enough along some of the box structure was removed to save weight.
Fuselage needs a good sanding but that will wait for another day.

Started on the tail frame. Probably going to sheet them too.

Looking good Marc.

Sheeted the tail feathers and gave them a rough sanding. Still need to be hinged and install on fuselage.

Spent time figuring out how I was going to mount the wing and blend it into the body.
Once that was done, the next step was sheeting the top inner sections of the wings. As each wing has 3 sections with diferent angles, they needed lots of sanding to get a good  fit. Finishing the wingtips  and cut out the ailerons are pending.

Very nice Mark. model not done often.
Good to see another shop almost as cluttered as mine....

Discovered the wing twisted while skinning the center sections and I haven't been able to remove it.  :'(
I removed a wing skin and applied a new one while 'reverse' twisting but that failed to make any change. I think the problem is due to the difference in airfoil taper in the sections. Wondering if a rear spar would have helped hold the shape.
I am abandoning this build. May use the fuselage for some future sport build.

After a cooling off period it was time to give this another go as I didn't want to waste all the balsa. The problem center section was planked in sections, and this seemed to have worked. At the gull section transition it looked good. Now as long as it holds. Wrighting this, i realize i didn't measure at tge wingtip, going to have to do that tomorrow.
Still needs a good sanding and filling.

Started the landing gear by bending and soldering some music wire. Need to dress up the legs so they are wider but turned out ok.

Hinged all surfaces. But not connected. Can't find any carbon tubes to make push rods with. Need to think of something or spring for shipping from us.

The wing struts had me stumped for a bit now. Need them to be quick to hook up / remove or i won't want to take flying often. Bought some 1/8x1/2 aluminium for the struts. Thinking of permanent attach to wings and make other end with a bend to match fuse and bolt to fuse. There was some balsa blocks added to attach the struts too. But that won't do for repeated conecting/disconnecting.
Started to open fuse to add a small ply plate and T-nuts for the struts. This still in progress.

Started cowl by cutting blocks to form the cowl front ring. As the cowl stands proud of the fuse, still need to figure a way to attach securly.

Wanted an easy setup for the wing struts. Decided on aluminium struts hinged on the wing. Picked up some 1/2 x 1/8 inch aluminium and a rivet gun to attach the hinges. Then I couldn't find any 1/2in wide hinges. So used the 3/4 hinges I had.
Drilled hole for strut attachment, then ground down the hinges.

Next was the cowl. As this stands proud of the fuse, had to ensure it was centered. So, made a cowl frame and used some shims to center it on fuse. When happy, screwed the aluminium standoffs to the firewall. Built up some segment rings for the nose and sheeted the rest.
Once fiberglassed some temp internal braceing will be removed for air flow.

Started making a plug to hopefully mold a canopy from,
Next bit is all internal, servo rails and other stuff installed.
Some sanding was done outside, so had to put it together to see how it looked  :)

With the nice weather the last few weeks, I decided to jump ahead and get the painting done while it was still warm enough outside. With the paint on, i 'had' to add the decals, so that was todays task.
Still need to add baffles to cowl, and run all the plumbing, but it's getting there.

The P11c is all together and ready to fly. On the heavy side at 10.3lb without fuel. 64in ws and a 15cc gas.

Had a short maiden flight. I was worried about the weight and using a 15cc. But it lifted off much sooner than I expected. A bit of rudder and down elevator was needed.
Then one of the struts broke free. The aluminium rivet broke. So brought it in for a smooth touch, then the wheel fell off and it flipped onto its back cracking the rudder post >:(
Repairs are done and looking forward to flying this more.

Awesome 'little' plane!! It was a joy to watch (except the last few seconds) hope to see it in the air again soon.
