Title: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 14th, 2018 at 6:42am
I acquired this from Todd a little over a year ago. Mike was original owner and the work he completed is top notch. It was about 2/3 framed up . So the reality is it's about 1/4 done. Depending on the detailing maybe even less.
So I'm going to give it a go but I have to admit in recent years I'm having trouble getting these big projects done. Wingspan : Top wing: 120 inches, Bottom wing: 107 inches (True scale airfoil) Fuse length : 91 Wing area: 3 966 Sq. inches Wing loading: 26 ounces / square foot. Cubic wing loading: 5.09. Values between 4 and 6 are sailplane/glider values. Cowl diameter: 13" Plug-in wing and stab panels This is what I hope to create |

Awesome project! Always wanted something like this.

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 15th, 2018 at 7:44am
Well the first thing I need to do is construct a gig to fasten the wings to. These wings have been kicking around in an unfinished state for many years and there are a couple of warps to be pulled out.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 15th, 2018 at 7:54am
The first one of four is mounted on the gig. You can't see it but I had to shim the wing up in a spot when I clamped it down to pull a warp out. This all guess as to how much to shim. The plan is to sheet and finish the wing and hope that it will come out straight. And it did :D

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 15th, 2018 at 8:04am
The n-strut mounts are installed. lots of them.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 15th, 2018 at 8:07am
The wing tips are one tricky bugger. The angle and the height doesn't seem to agree with each other. Going to be a guess here. It's almost like the tips needs to be bent to achieve the shape of the full size. I went on the center line of the wing cord so if needed I can add wood later on and reshape. I have a feeling these tips are going to be difficult to get correct. Once all four wings are built I'll decide what to do as a group.

These shots are not in order. Some of the wings in various stages.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 19th, 2018 at 7:19am
The wings are pretty much build. Well as far as I could go. Ran out of wood again. So I stuck it together to check the incidence. There is a .8 of a degree discrepancy across the span so that can be fixed with the N-struts. All things considered I'm real happy with that. :D
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 19th, 2018 at 7:24am
I decided to go with a test build. The N-struts are made of basswood so I build the test pieces out of spruce to allow for mistakes .

I like the incidence meter mod. Think I will need to do the same to check my build. |

This is a piece of basswood I picked in Dartmouth. It was 42x6x1 rough board. If you need basswood for a project this is the stuff. Best of all it with tax was under 12 dollars. :D
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 20th, 2018 at 2:34pm
While waiting for the n struts to cure I decided to work on the gear.
First I rough the gear with some 60 grit. Then cut the pieces from 3/16 wood . |
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 20th, 2018 at 2:37pm
Next I used silicone to stick the balsa to the gear. The idea is to allow the wood some flexibility to move if the landings are hard.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Fingers on Jan 20th, 2018 at 3:29pm

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 25th, 2018 at 7:11am
Wheels and pants are next. They took about 9 hours to get right. With all the beveled parts that go inside and out.
I used a simple gig to set the height of the pants. |

The power plant.

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 25th, 2018 at 7:19am
I have balsa! :D Back to the wings, I need to get the leading edge finish up. There's about 20 feet of it so in order to keep to true I made a leading edge sanding block. Hopefully it will simplify the job.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Steve Mosher on Jan 25th, 2018 at 3:56pm
I still say it's shame to cover up those cool tires and rims. Maybe there is a scale scheme that used clear wheel pants... ;D
Plane's looking good, Al. Great work. |

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Jan 29th, 2018 at 7:17am
Unfortunately I'm going to have to put the engine on hold until the can muffler system arrives.
So back to the wings. Here's a pic of the landing lights and an idea as to what they look like. I see the light placement is a little off on one and will have to be remade. Funny how I didn't see that on the plane but in the picture you can clearly see it. :-? |
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Fingers on Jan 29th, 2018 at 11:26am
Looking good Al. That's a yuge cowl!
Funny, in the pic with the tape, my first thought was OMG he's putting a gun on it!!!! Then realized it's just the end of a screw driver >:( |

Great work Al! Your restorations and builds put me in mind of The Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford in England (they did the restoration work on the P 47 SNAFU). Like you, they restore old aircraft to like new or better condition. Lots of time and lots of skill involved in every project.

Looks like this forum photo size maximum is set to somewhere around 700 kb Al. Your other shots are under 700kb.
Resize the photos to something smaller. Your current size is 2048 by 1152. Not sure what software you're using, but downsize making the larger side about 800. Your phone probably has that option too. If these are phone photos. Additionally, the current size makes it hard for people to view them having to scroll around to see the whole photo. Not complainign mind you, just trying to help. |

Hopefully you can get this picture upload thing fixed Al! I have been freezing my A_ _ off:Winter Flying here all Winter in Ottawa and have been following your build with interest! Can't wait to sign on each day and see if you have uploaded more progress pictures. Sorry I won't be able to see your maiden but hopefully someone will post a video of it! Thanks for sharing!

I'm going to cover the plane with Sig Koverall. It will have to be glued on so Sig Stick-it worked great for me in the past so going to stink the whole house up with it. LOL |

Here's a few pictures of an aileron. I'm finally happy with the way the wing tips look.
Man they are full of interesting angles. First cover the four of them. Then the process of putting the panels on can began. |
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Feb 18th, 2018 at 6:38am
It took a bit of time to fit and glue all the panels on the top and bottom of four ailerons. However the panels are nice and should really add to the look of the wings.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Feb 18th, 2018 at 6:41am
The finish product. :)
The wings are just about ready for covering. Just need the nav lights to arrive so I can make sure they will not cause any unforeseen problems. |

More on the tail wheel. A little more time on the mill and the gear is ready to be mounted. Not the right wheel yet but you get the idea. The tiller arm is yet to be installed. I haven't started any of the servo mounts so the arm will come after that. |

Wondering how you finisf the 'oveflap' of the cloth? Do you add 'stik it' to the overlap to glue it down? Or does the dope take care of that?

All I did is add more stick-it to the overlap. I'm not going to use dope on the plane. A good modern filler primer will fill the weave then paint it with base coat clear coat. I also used thin ca around the cut out areas so they cant move when you shrink it down. Use very little because it will make the covering brittle. I also let the glue dry for a day and went back and hit it with the heat to really shrink it down. I want that concave look between the ribs. It is amazing how much coverall will shrink but be careful with it. It will pull! Three down and one more to go. |

Going to give them a few days to settle in then hit the open bays with one last blast of heat to tighten it a little more. Not a lot to report lately. Very time consuming to put fabric on the tail group.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Mar 5th, 2018 at 6:57am
Even though the covering was nice and tight it seem to need to be sealed up. After a few test on it I decided to fill the weave to stiffen it up even more. nitrate dope has always worked great for this but after the Sig Stick-it smell I went with Polycrylic. Hopefully that's not a mistake.
There are two coats on the wings and most of the tail group and so far I like the results. |
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Mar 5th, 2018 at 7:08am
The stuff goes on like water and it's very easy to put too much on. That will give a hanging drip on the inside so it was very slow going on the first coat.
The second coat went on normally and I'll take that as a good sign on filling the weave. This shot shows just how wetted out the second coat is. It looks heavy but again it's a very light coat. Two complete coats have resulted in less then half of a quart can. |

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Bill F (retiredVTT) on Mar 6th, 2018 at 3:12pm
..so research on the WACO name pronunciation resulted in this..
"WACO (referring to the aircraft) is usually pronounced "wah-co"[1] (the first syllable pronounced as in "water"), not "way-co" like Waco, Texas," ..and I guess this also eliminates WACKO ..although this term might be how Al has felt at times during this project. Bottom line ...Your Wah-co is looking Wahderful..! Bill |

Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Mar 16th, 2018 at 5:59am
I've made the fire wall so it is removable. 10 bolts and its off. This really helps when you need to get in there for whatever. The headers will go through the firewall.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Mar 16th, 2018 at 6:01am
A few of the engine installed.
|
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Mar 16th, 2018 at 6:12am
Here you can see the header and how tight the fit is to get this all to work. Lots of braze welding to get all these curves to connect.
I was worry about a lot of heat building up inside the plane with such a confined entry for air. I may put a fan in it but the second pic is taken from the forward cockpit so the hot air radiating out from the pipes should be able to get out easily. It looks like an easy install but it took a few try's and failures to get it right. :-? |
Title: Re: 33% Waco YMF Post by Yak Man on Mar 16th, 2018 at 6:20am
Also because the carb is below the landing gear plate I had to resort to nyrods for the throttle and choke. There are some crazy bends. Not to happy with that either..

That's the plan :) Well under way now. Here's a few of the progress. Yellow was put on early yesterday. Then last night we managed to get it taped so the blue could go on. The last two colours will go on today and the clear coat. It's quite a process and I'm learning a lot. Todd truly is a master at this stuff. :master |

Put most of it together to have a look, Couldn't stop myself. [smiley=laugh.gif] These may be the last ones until I get it outside. Now that it an ARF it should be ready to fly in two to three weeks. If all goes well and the rest of the stuff arrives in a timely fashion. Monster size project and I'm a little burned out. Hopefully I'll get a good season without too much trouble.
A BIG THANK-YOU TO TODD FOR PUTTING HIS OWN WORK ASIDE TO HELP ME. I AM IN YOU DET BIG TIME BUD! |

There is about two hours work left on the rigging. Then I'll check the balance one last time and run the engine. At this point it should be ready to go out to the field for a test flight.
A few pic of the rigging.. |

Looking super there Al. Notice Iguana, nice touch....plane is certainly large enough to carry him as pilot. ALSO notice the bolt cutters. If you need that much nose weight, perhaps............ :o
