The other pictures of the plane alone have been opened around 45 times each. The one with the pit crew has been opened 60 times.

Makes me wonder...  :-[ :-[ :-[

What a cool looking plane.  I don't know a lot about the Dauntless, so now I have a great reason to check it out a bit.

Good to see different planes showing up at the field....many of them being warbirds.

I like the look of it too, Mike. I wanted something a bit different that you don't see everyday but it had to be a warbird (of course). Won't be a speed demon so all I'll be able to do is climb up, go into a steep dive and drop my one bomb on everyone else, I guess. ;)

making that drop rack will be the highlite of the plane Steve. Since the Hurricane will be about the same speed, I'll fly cover :P   Miller too although I think he's even slower than we are

With the amount of  work Sandy's putting into the new Hurricane and the time Mike and Dan are spending on detailing theirs, I pretty well have to add some extra detail work to the Dauntless or I'll be laughed off the field. Thinking about the bomb rack, guns, antenna wire for a start.

The sections appear to be separated.

It doesn't come with the three sections separated, Dan, but I am considering doing that. It wouldn't take too much effort.

To keep from paying exorbitant UPS fees when things cross the border, Jack, you ship the package to Johnson's TrueValue Hardware in Calais (Just use their address as the shipping address with your name). Quick run down on a Saturday, cross and pick up the package ($15.00 US), have a nice lunch at Yancy's, pay the HST on the way back and you're on the way home. If we hadn't stopped for lunch, the whole process wouldn't have taken 20 minutes from the time I got to US Customs to where I was leaving Canadian Customs.

I ordered mine from TexasRC. Great guy to deal with.

Nope. Just use their address with your name.

Address: 188 North St, Calais, ME 04619, USA

And follow with UPS Tracking. Once I saw it was delivered, I just went down the next weekend. I think they are open both Saturday and Sunday.

They do this a lot. They have a large counter at the back of the store just for packages. The "young petite lady"  ;) at the counter will give you your shipment and a slip of paper. Just pay the fee in the way out at the regular checkout.

Well, I've given it some thought... MAAC won't let me fly over the pits, everyone else will be using the runway so I think that leaves the parking area. In the film, they have a nice white dot for the center so I'm thinking that maybe a nice white Dodge Caravan would make a nice target if someone would care to donate one. I think your van is probably pretty safe, Al. I'd have a better chance of hitting myself. ;D ;D

Ran into my first glitch - someone at CY Models worked at ESM for a short period, I believe.

Manual says to drill the holes for the rear wing bolts 120mm apart. I did that (thought it drilled awfully easy  >:() and tightened the bolts down. Somebody at the factory forgot to insert the wood blocks between the upper and lower wing skin so now I have a hole in my wing. #^$%#^$#

Somehow, I don't think 1/8" balsa sheeting will be strong enough to hold a 100" wing on (not with my landings).

I can fix it by opening the wing on the top side (which will be hidden when bolted in place), gluing in blocks next to a couple of wing ribs and adding a new piece of wing sheeting. Bit of paint and all will be good.

Damn, I know the instructions clearly show that the space between the two rear wing bolts is 120mm. They lie.  >:( >:( >:( It's 120mm from the center line of the wing. Blocks were in there. Just had to play "Where's Waldo?" to find them.

Looked like lots of room but a bit of a tight fit the cowl is only 305mm in width, you know. May have to cut small holes for the plug wires  :( but not a bit issue. Bit of paint may make them fairly unnoticeable.

That bright window behind you fooling the camera, it set the exposure based on the bright light there, resulting in everything else being dark.

Post by Steve Mosher on Dec 29th, 2016 at 11:16am
Thanks, Al. Looks much better, doesn't it?

Mike, the engine looks a bit bigger than it really is because I was so close to the plane when I took the picture. The engine and spark plugs easily fit inside the cowl but I would probably need about an extra 1/4 inch to fit the cowl without making a couple of holes. I was pretty sure I would have to do this so it's not a big issue.

Steve,
How many servos for the flaps?
Do they use a can arm system to engage flap/dive brake function?
Can't wait to see it. You'll be be able to fly away from yourself for ten minutes and still see it!

Title: Re: Douglas SBD Dauntless
Post by Steve Mosher on Dec 29th, 2016 at 5:48pm
One servo on each wing for the dive brakes and one for the main center flap, Dan.

The dive brake servo runs two pushrods - one up and one down. Dive brakes extend up and down 80mm (yup, just over three inches  :)). I have a feeling it would not be a good idea, either in the model or the real thing, to extend them at high speed. The last thing you see may be the wings tearing off.  ;D ;D ;D

Need some advice from the scale gurus...

I need to get a small amount of touchup paint for the Dauntless. Mainly hanger rash but I wouldn't mind painting the gear also. Prefer something easy, odorless etc. Lots of options at the hobby shop but I don't know one from the other. Need three different colours.

I'd go for the acrylic paints Steve. Relatively odourless, easy to work with, dry fast....Tamiya I think?

Thanks, Sandy.

Of course, the other option is to leave it like it is and brag to everyone about the incredible effort I went to so I could achieve a truly scale look.  ;) ;D ;)

Well Doh! Touch the "spots" with a tiny brush and tad of aluminium paint, instant weathering..

Steve
Al the paint's work well, with gas you don't have it attacking the paint like nitro.
I usually don't care what brand, I pick by how closely they match.

Thanks, guys.

Heading up now to finally finish setting up control throws.

Well, thanks to an extremely talented and innovative small engine mechanic and machinist (thanks again, Al), the big hunk of metal at the front of the Dauntless now goes "putt-putt" and the spinny thing spins.

Got my new legs for the Dauntless from BigPlanes in the Netherlands. Hopefully, they'll stand up to my trademark landing  - a 35 pound plane impacting the ground at 80 miles per hour. :)

Very nice stuff. That issue should be solved. :)

Neat control box too - it will control retracts, brakes and has rudder input for differential braking. Has it's own battery input - a 2S 900 mah pack is good for about 25 retract sequences.

There the ticket.  That's the gear that we should all be getting.
