Hey guys,
Just ordered my winter plane build, the sig Kougar... I definitely will need help, its been 20yrs since I've build a kit :o Needs some hints for glue, covering colour, epoxy ect. :) What do you recommend, and where can I buy? ::) http://sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/DetailProduct.html?L+Sig+dxkw2756+_Dimagefile_02SIGRC35_2ehtml_01uzup_02F_01num_02SIGRC35_01 Excited... 8-) |

Bumped into Les and Todd in the Xmas Toy store on Windmill rd. and Todd suggested using high gloss solartex fabric for the covering...sounds like a plan. . available from AMR in Montreal, Now I just need to save a few pennies to pay for it.
In thinking the Thunderbird scheme would be the way to go for the finish? ;D |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Dec 20th, 2015 at 11:38am
Huh..I guess everyone is working on there own projects :(
I'm going to use the reliable Evo NX60 with the Jett exhaust ::) should be fast enough I guess... |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Yak Man on Dec 20th, 2015 at 1:41pm
Nice choose Jack! That will move a Kouger along real nice in deed. :D

Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by recoil on Dec 20th, 2015 at 7:01pm
Hi Jack. I recommend CA thin and CA medium for most of the construction. Also, 30 minute Epoxy for wing joints, firewall, etc. You could thin down the epoxy to paint the engine compartment for fuel proofing. If you need help, call. This will be an excellent flyer. Rae.

they still make and sell the cougar Jack? I think I was flying one of those somewhere around 1945 or so. lol
A great airplane, you'll like it. Keep that workbench organized and clean! |

Good advice Rae, picked some up when I bumped into les :)
Al, I was doing that yesterday :o I'm thinking the small block .60 might be 2 big😉 |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Dec 21st, 2015 at 12:22pm
Just cleaning out the Garage/workshop/toyshop snr. Al.....
seems like ill need a gross of xacto blades, better preflight the bandsaw... Post office says santas arriving early tomorrow... :egyptian Al, which glue should I use for skinning the foam core wing? :-? :Anyone Wow, the King Kobra sure looks like it might be a follow up build.. ::) Todd, do you know of another source for the Solartex, AMR is all out :o |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Yak Man on Dec 21st, 2015 at 3:57pm
Use a real slow cure epoxy. Or you can try what I do, 3M-77 contact cement. If you want to try the 3M-77 it will be a bunch lighter. Too much to say here on that. Give me a call and I'll give you the info.

Yes, mrs Santa confiscated it right away... :o

Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by yorcram on Dec 23rd, 2015 at 11:20am
The use of 3M77 for skinning wings is great.
My bandsaw is still under the tree, hopefully along with a new dremel. Marc |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Dec 24th, 2015 at 7:14am
Yes mark, the band saw is great, but too big for the job sometimes. I picked up a mini hobbie plane from Canadian tire when I picked up the 3m glue.
I also have the excessory tool add on box of heads for the Drexel tool, picked that up at princess auto.. ;) Merry xmas ;D |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Fingers on Dec 29th, 2015 at 2:03pm
Good plane Jack....
Quote:
Did get a lot of mile of Mike Pothier's. He had one painted in epoxy camoflage and it weighed high side of 10 pounds. Still flew like a Kougar tho. |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by al on Dec 29th, 2015 at 11:53pm
Mine was a hand me down from bernie leroux and was pretty tattered when I got it. Cowl was gone. The canopy was just a windscreen with a ping pong ball pilot with scarf blowing in the breeze. Great airplane, flew it for a long time and hundreds of flights.
Once at Maragree I had it parked beside a fence there and at some point the fence fell over and crushed poor little ping pong man. After all that poor sucker had been through with Bernie and then me throwing him around the sky, a fence blown over by the wind took him out. lol |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 1st, 2016 at 1:04pm
Good one Al,
My Kit is now out of bond and am allowed to look in the box...oooo lots of Balsa in there :o I have to recover my basement from the Garbage pile there, pickup was boxing day... Will start the build soon... ::) I'm thinking of an os .46 instead of the evo 60, save that one for the King Cobra... ;) anyone have a nice os .46 lying around? :-? :aviater |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Fingers on Jan 2nd, 2016 at 11:10am
The .46 will give you a super plane Jack. Too much power CAN cause problems with the kougar..not saying it will, but can..
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by al on Jan 2nd, 2016 at 11:49am Fingers wrote on Jan 2nd, 2016 at 11:10am:
I agree sandy and was gonna comment same, but figured I'd better mind my own business. so since you have here goes....lol the 60 would be too heavy on that plane, very nose heavy making some balance weight on the ass end necessary, all of which adds up to a heavier airplane and heavier does not fly better despite what some people might tell you. mine had an os40 and you wouldn't need any more power than that, even if you were trevor. lol I once was given an already heavy zero fighter 40 sized, and because of the short nose hard to balance. I screwed on a .60 and it balanced then, but man what a disaster that was. a dog, dog, dog, dog, very difficult in every way. |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 2nd, 2016 at 12:50pm
Yes guys, Id already decided not to use the .60 looking at the evo .46nx anyone have any experience with this engine.. :)
get my build room back tomorow 8-) http://www.horizonhobby.com/airplanes/airplane-engines-15042--1/evolution-46nx-glow-engine-with-muffler-evoe0461 Horizon are saying it has a redesigned combustion changer resulting in more power... :planecool |

Hey Al, how wide should I leave the trailing edge of the wing, it just says sand to contour? :o
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by al on Jan 6th, 2016 at 8:44am
It should match up to your Aileron stock. Shouldn't have to sand away too much.
|

Good Idea ;D

Sand 1.5in blocks of balsa for wingtips...another pile of sawdust... :-? Think I will transfer wing profile and then pre cut :o I knew I needed this 300$ camera for something... Table scroll saw would be handy :( |

oops, too late glued on sandy...I already had a 100$ worth of sawdust :o
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Grant on Jan 8th, 2016 at 6:57am
Hi Jack
Never to late to save weight especially if one side is heavy. Before you cover might want to check that. Gouge out the balsa from the bottom of the heavy side. Gonna to have to balance the plane anyways. Grant |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 8th, 2016 at 11:53am
Good advice guys, can I check the balance now and adjust the sanding? :-/
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Fingers on Jan 8th, 2016 at 10:04pm
can get it close now by hollowing underneath, before you cover......then fine tune with finish nails
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 11th, 2016 at 9:07am
Next step cut aileron's to fit wing...before the wing tip or including the wing tip? :-?
also need filler block to cover torque rods |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 11th, 2016 at 9:08am
:-?
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by al on Jan 11th, 2016 at 9:15am JackDD wrote on Jan 11th, 2016 at 9:07am:
The ailerons would go right out to the end of the wing jack. You could have done it either way, having the wingtip enclose the ailerons, but since the wingtip blocks are already installed and shaped, the ailerons will be full length. It'll make no difference in flying. just groove the blocks to allow the pieces to cover the torque rods, gluing carefully so as not to bind the torque rods with glue. |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 11th, 2016 at 12:30pm
ok Al, good plan...sig plans are skimpy to say the least, too bad I already glued the wingtips on :o
they did mention not to over glue the brass bushing that the torque rods pivot through ::) I wont be able to do much more with the aileron's after this step, as I have to cover them before gluing the hinges. :) |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by al on Jan 11th, 2016 at 3:58pm
also cut two notches on the upper side of the trailing edge where the aileron horns come out of the rear blocks so the horns can rotate with the servo movement. Likewise additional notches in the rear blocks at the horn location.
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 12th, 2016 at 8:32am
I think the holes are oversize, ::) but the horns have plenty of movement.
I'm pretty well stuck now on the wings till I get the fuse built now, as there are some molding to the fuse that has to be done prior to covering. 8-) ultacote white ordered and on the way as well as the thunderbirds decal sheets. Actually was at Nellis AFB a few years back and got to see them perform practice on the flight-Line... :aviater Awsum :planecool |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 12th, 2016 at 8:35am
Al, Should I start the firewall without receiving the engine yet, I think it might be handy to have it in the engine mount prior to drilling the firewall? :-?
The Evo .46NX should be here soon... There is a note recommending checking the motor first...it fact there are a lot of notes :-/ Complete manual http://www.kavanrc.de/instructions/sigrc35kougar.pdf |

|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Yak Man on Jan 12th, 2016 at 12:29pm
As long as the spacing is correct for your engine choice, It all looks right to me. The only other thing to consider is the distance the muffler is off the engine. Wouldn't want the muffler into the side of the airplane. You may be better off waiting for the power plant to arrive.
|

Hmm, something not right here, seems like sig has the dimensions wrong on the f3 bulkhead...
what the hell am I gonna do here? :-? I'm thinking glue the f2 and f4 which fit fine, then measure the new dimensions for the f3 :o then cut a new piece :-? What ya think guys? :o :( >:( |

Thks Al, had a good talk with Al, and he said 30 years ago when he built his ::) there was a filler block...
good memory Al...and there it was an FB :-? Does this look about right... ::) I'm thinking this should not be flush with the skin because when you put the wing on something needs to fit in there :-/ anyone have a Kouger handy? :( :huhsign :huhsign :madhatter |
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by Yak Man on Jan 13th, 2016 at 4:48pm
Bevel FG to fit against the triangle stock. That's what the plan say to do in your #9 picture. ;D

If I understand your question, it stays inside the fuse. Glued against the ply doubler. I thinks. It's only been 20 plus years since I built one. The old hard drive is a bit fuzzy.
|
Title: Re: Sig Kougar Kit build Post by JackDD on Jan 14th, 2016 at 8:18am

Time to think about the fuel tank, sig doesn't mention the size, I have a 6, 8, and 10oz tank her the six has the front feed, which I like for service the 8 fits but would have to plum the fuel lines :P the 10 looks too big to fit without modifying the bulkheads to get it in... 8 seems awful small for screeming round the circuit for 10 min :o any thoughts guys ::)

Wow Jack; you are really moving your project along at a great pace. Looking at the pics does indeed bring back memories of my build so many years ago. As Sandy said, my model came in heavy, but that was mostly because I chose to paint it with epoxy...and because all of my planes come in heavy ::)
You are doing a great job; keep the pictures coming. |
