Title: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Jan 6th, 2013 at 9:04am
Santa gave me a 100cc size Ultimate kit for Christmas!
Looks like I'm going to actually build something for a change. This going to take a while, not as slow as Sandy, but it should take all winter! ;) |

Oooo...Those wings are soooome thin.... 8-)
Where's the 28lb Kerosene Ram air Turbine go? :-? |

Nice choice Al.
Be sure to post lots of pics of the build process. |

There's two of them in this one Jack! They go in the wheel pants! ::)

Is it a Real Kit...one you have to glue together? :-?
If so..your welcome to borrow some of mine...I went a little overboard, when I went into Canadian tire, Xmas time.... ;) |

Excellent Al. It's been a long time since you last posted a build thread. Include lots of pictures. It hurts my lips to read too much :)

Exclusiv Modelbau ?
|
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Jan 6th, 2013 at 9:28pm
Well I guess the first thing to do is lighten all the formers.
Took quite a while to cut all the holes. :P A lot more stuff has been lighten then just what you see here. Almost a pound out of the old over designed kit. |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Jan 6th, 2013 at 9:40pm
As you can see the wing ribs have been lighten also.
If you look close you can see the hardwood spars are also replaced with a balsa carbon fiber laminated one. This stuff all adds up to unwanted weight. >:( |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Steve Mosher on Jan 6th, 2013 at 11:26pm
So that is how an R/C plane gets put together - we've all been sticking ARF's together for so long that I almost forgot how. :D ;)
Now, if you can remember how to apply Monokote, you'll be all set. ;D ;D :D Plane's looking good, Al! |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by JackDD on Jan 7th, 2013 at 9:12am
Lightning holes in Balsa? :-? Its not 6061 Al, ;)
is it going to be worth it, :-? I would have just used a bigger prop ::) :) |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by waverider on Jan 7th, 2013 at 10:05am
i would agree with Jack
especially the frames and bulkheads I would look at 1/64 ply doublers where there is fuse torsion the biggest stress on an airframe [ in this case the empennage] comes in a manoeuver which is called a rolling pull-up the landing gear shock loads have to be carried through the fuse image yourself as part of the airframe and feel where the loads are distributing |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by administrator on Jan 7th, 2013 at 11:15am
A pound of weight!! That amazing Al!! Keep the pictures coming. Everything looks great.

Have you ever seen inside a modern 50cc size and up plane? Trust me there's not much there and every gram counts. Here's a shot of a foam core I did some years back. Foam and a couple carbon fiber strips held that together, and it's still going today |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Jan 7th, 2013 at 5:06pm
Oh, also the foam cores only had 1/6 sheeting that was held together with 3M-77 contack cement.
Here's some shots of the wing as it progresses. |

not a bad picture of that tail al, (better one on the wall behind) ;D but you need to get something in one or two of those to show us the size, yourself perhaps?

Title: Re: My New Ride Post by waverider on Jan 31st, 2013 at 12:54pm
methinks this needs more longerons
not sure CF will do the trick the covering will go into diagonal tension and prodide some torsional stidffness but a heavy landing might do the break back mountain thing only Al won't be gay about it |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Fingers on Jan 31st, 2013 at 1:02pm

Well next we need to build some servo bays. This a shot of the rudder one, nothing crazy here.
|
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 8th, 2013 at 8:01am
The ones for the wings took a little more work. To support those high power servos I made some ply ribs.

The rib formers will go on each side of the rails that the servos set on.
:-?mmmmm I seem to have lost my pic of the finish servo bay? More on that later. |

Next, the back end of the turtle deck.
Took some old balsa and glued it together to make a block and carved to shape. |

Been a little busy with other things lately but manage to get a little more done.
More back end stuff. Rudder horns are installed. |

Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 17th, 2013 at 9:37am
I was relieved to see the main wings are parallel. That's a lot of extra work avoided there! :)

Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 17th, 2013 at 9:41am
As it turns out the stab is off by about .5 of a degree.
A little sanding will fix that. No biggie. :) The plane is almost ready to go to covering. :) :) My helper |

Hi Al
Saw a black and yellow Ultimate in a hangar years ago in Ontario. It look pretty sharp looking. The best colors for visibly to me is a dark red and white along with some black trim. Hope it flies as good as the smaller Goldberg Ultimates. Never had a plane that could fly as good as an Ultimate in all conditions. Grant |

I have to get this onto the plane. |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 22nd, 2013 at 7:37am
First I have to cut a whole into the firewall so the engine will go on. The carb sticks out past the engine mount.
|
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 22nd, 2013 at 7:43am
Lets have a look.
In this one you can see that the engine has an offset. that's common, but I didn't measure how far forward the engine had to go. That's proven to be a mistake, it's off by an inch and a half and to farther complicate things the cowl doesn't have the same offset as the firewall. :-? |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 22nd, 2013 at 7:54am
I'm going to have to make a stand off out of wood.
Normally I would machine out some stand offs but the 85 is a but of a shaker so a pedestal for the engine is a better choice. |

Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 22nd, 2013 at 8:04am
If you look close you can see the amount of offset needed to get the front of the engine to exit the cowl in the center so the spinner will line up nice. I think I got lucky on this one. :)

Here we have a few shots of the offset ring I have to make to get the spinner to line up with the cowl. This is a pile of work that shouldn't have been needed, not to mention things like this can add weight on fast!
|
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 24th, 2013 at 11:19pm
The ring gets epoxy on.
|
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Feb 24th, 2013 at 11:25pm
Next I need to make a fillet around the outside to seal it up and to get it shaped correctly. I like west system epoxy for this.
It's a great product that sands well and well suited for this job. The 410 weights nothing and is a great filler that withstands gravity. |

Good Morning Al,
Just wondering how you plan on syncing your aileron servos? Are you using a "matchbox"? What is your opinion of these? Thanks, Brian |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Apr 24th, 2013 at 4:46pm
Brian
I have never used a matchbox before and know very little about then. I'm a Futaba guy. I plan to run each servo in it's own channel onto an s-bus hub. That way I can adjust each one individually with the transmitter. 8-) This s-bus stuff is really neat. the receiver only has 2 channels and 2 s-bus ports in it, runs on a 2S lypo and is very small. It's the lightest radio set-up I have ever had! :D |
Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Brian on Apr 25th, 2013 at 8:35pm

Title: Re: My New Ride Post by Yak Man on Apr 26th, 2013 at 5:42am
Brian... The 8FG is a great radio system and will do S-bus.
For that matter any Futaba tx will work an S-bus system. Had the plane out to Todds shop to get some paint on the cowl landing gear and wheel pants. Man he does nice work! The plane looks great! Thanks Twinkle Toes :) |

This plane is kind of like an ARF now. I'm waiting on some servos, but once they arrive I'll be able to finish it up.
I'm thinking 2 weeks for the maiden. Sure hope it flys good. Here's a size her up shot or two. The plane is not that big. |

The paint, the covering, and the colours/pattern make the plane look fantastic. Great job Al.

I'm using S-bus in my Top Flight Spitfire. One connection to the receiver for each of two aileron servos and one flap servo. Works just fine. Radio is T14SG.

Yep, Did you notice the tail crunch on the Extra? That manage to get into the garage door one day. Of all the ways I could have imagine busting the tail, that wasn't one of them. >:( |

I don't have a date in mind. Once it done the weather will dictate when it happens. I'll probably do it on a spur of the moment. |
