Title: My New Ride
Post by Yak Man on Jan 6th, 2013 at 9:04am
Santa gave me a 100cc size Ultimate kit for Christmas!
Looks like I'm going to actually build something for a change. This going to take a while, not as slow as Sandy, but it should take all winter! ;)

Thanks Dan. A bipe will be a nice change for a while.
I hope to post some picks of the build.

Is it a Real Kit...one you have to glue together? :-?

If so..your welcome to borrow some of mine...I went a little overboard, when I went into Canadian tire, Xmas time.... ;)

Excellent Al. It's been a long time since you last posted a build thread.  Include lots of pictures.  It hurts my lips to read too much  :)

Yep, it's a real kit. Big box of wood and a set of plans!
Thanks for the glue offer, I have lots. Got about 12 bottles
from Mighty Small Cars a few weeks ago. Best deal in town for ca. [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

Exclusiv Modelbau ?

Title: Re: My New Ride
Post by Yak Man on Jan 6th, 2013 at 9:28pm
Well I guess the first thing to do is lighten all the formers.
Took quite a while to cut all the holes. :P
A lot more stuff has been lighten then just what you see here. Almost a pound out of the old over designed kit.

As you can see the wing ribs have been lighten also.
If you look close you can see the hardwood spars are also replaced with a balsa carbon fiber laminated one.
This stuff all adds up to unwanted weight. >:(

So that is how an R/C plane gets put together - we've all been sticking ARF's together for so long that I almost forgot how.  :D ;)

Now, if you can remember how to apply Monokote, you'll be all set. ;D ;D :D

Plane's looking good, Al!

Lightning holes in Balsa? :-? Its not 6061 Al,  ;)
is it going to be worth it, :-?
I would have just used a bigger prop ::)

Title: Re: My New Ride
Post by waverider on Jan 7th, 2013 at 10:05am
i would agree with Jack
especially the frames and bulkheads
I would look at 1/64 ply doublers where there is fuse torsion

the biggest stress on an airframe [ in this case the empennage] comes in a manoeuver which is called a rolling pull-up

the landing gear shock loads have to be carried through the fuse

image yourself as part of the airframe and feel where the loads are distributing

Have you ever seen inside a modern 50cc size and up plane?
Trust me there's not much there and every gram counts.

Here's a shot of a foam core I did some years back. Foam and a couple carbon fiber strips held that together, and it's still going today

Oh, also the foam cores only had 1/6 sheeting that was held together with 3M-77 contack cement.

Here's some shots of the wing as it progresses.

Yea Shane, you know what I'm talking about. Some of there planes are build so light that you would expect them to explode in flight but they don't.  Well most don't LOL! ::)

I like the way that you sandwiched the carbon fibre strips into the main spars.  Presumably held together with CA?

not a bad picture of that tail al, (better one on the wall behind) ;D but you need to get something in one or two of those to show us the size, yourself perhaps?

the other day in new glasgow your new ride came up and someone wondered if it would be ready for this season.  I just laughed!  ;D

looking great so far, but how big is it.   ;D

methinks this needs more longerons
not sure CF will do the trick
the covering will go into diagonal tension and prodide some torsional stidffness
but a heavy landing might
do the break back mountain thing
only Al won't be gay about it

It may be quick but I'm trying to give the DA 85 a fighting chance. It's a small engine for this plane.

Hi Al,

One more question...sry

What engine are you planning on putting in this?

I'm trying to find out the difference in quality/ reliability of a DLA vs DLE vs DM vs DA

obviously the DA 's are the best, but how do the others rate?

Thanks,

Brian

This topic has been beat to death on every discussion forum known to man for a total of 9382 times.  I have seen many DA's die, DLE's die, 3W's die and so on.  With either one you roll the dice and hope it works.  DA seems to have the edge on customer service.

Depends on your definition of "best".  You could ask 20 people the same question and get 20 different answers.  If I were foolish enough to be looking for a 50cc airframe shaker, I would probably end up with a DA60.

I'm going to try a DA 85 in it. If that doesn't pull it well enough then I'm going to put a DA 120. That engine doesn't weigh much more then the 85.

Hi Al
Saw a black and yellow Ultimate in a hangar years ago in Ontario. It look pretty sharp looking.
The best colors for visibly to me is a dark red and white along with some black trim.
Hope it flies as good as the smaller Goldberg Ultimates.
Never had a plane that could fly as good as an Ultimate in all conditions.

I like Ben's scheme
but i would change the "red"
when I use to spray paint finishes using the epoxy paints
cough hack cough ...trouble breathing...

i use to take the red and add a little orange to the mix
it created the most vivid red i have ever seen

not sure where you would find a covering like that

That last one I posted you liked is actually a full size Ultimate based somewhere in Ontario.

I am on a mission now I found some more  ;D

I have also always liked Rob Holland's scheme although it is on a MXS-RH and not a bipe but might still work.

Title: Re: My New Ride

Lets have a look.
In this one you can see that the engine has an offset. that's common, but I didn't measure how far forward the engine had to go. That's proven to be a mistake, it's off by an inch and a half and to farther complicate things the cowl doesn't have the same offset as the firewall. :-?

I'm going to have to make a stand off out of wood.
Normally I would machine out some stand offs but the 85 is a but of a shaker so a pedestal for the engine is a better choice.

Here we have a few shots of the offset ring I have to make to get the spinner to line up with the  cowl. This is a pile of work that shouldn't have been needed, not to mention things like this can add weight on fast!

Next I need to make a fillet around the outside to seal it up and to get it shaped correctly. I like west system epoxy for this.
It's a great product that sands well and well suited for this job.
The 410 weights nothing and is a great filler that withstands gravity.

I think the biggest difference is the stuff is plastic as apposed to foam. It's a little stronger and will feather to the finest of an edge.

Hi Guys,

You can also buy the West system products at Burnside fiberglass, ask for Sandy or Carl and tell them i sent you...who knows they might give you my pricing....we buy a LOT of stuff there!

If there was enough interest i can purchase things there for a group at a much reduced price.

Good Morning Al,

Just wondering how you plan on syncing your aileron servos?

Are you using a "matchbox"?  What is your opinion of these?

Thanks,

Brian

Title: Re: My New Ride
Post by Yak Man on Apr 24th, 2013 at 4:46pm
Brian

I have never used a matchbox before and know very little about then. I'm a Futaba guy.

I plan to run each servo in it's own channel onto an s-bus hub.
That way I can adjust each one individually with the transmitter.  8-)

This s-bus stuff is really neat. the receiver only has 2 channels and 2 s-bus ports in it, runs on a 2S lypo and is very small.
It's the lightest radio set-up I have ever had! :D

Brian...   The 8FG is a great radio system and will do S-bus.
For that matter any Futaba tx will work an S-bus system.

Had the plane out to Todds shop to get some paint on the cowl landing gear and wheel pants.

I'm thinking 2 weeks for the maiden.
Sure hope it flys good.

Here's a size her up shot or two. The plane is not that big.
