Title: Flying field valdalism
Post by Ramzz on Nov 5th, 2012 at 12:07am
My flying field was the unfortunate recipient of mindless vandalism a few days ago. They did not touch any of the picnic tables or the shelter but the runway is totally destroyed and will be plowed, tilled and reseeded in the spring. Luckily, the @#$@#%'s were caught on scene by the RCMP and charges have been laid. So frustrating to see as I am the landowner. I built the club from scratch on my own dime for the community to use free of charge. I am going to get some quotes on repairs in the next few days. I estimate the damages to be in the 10,000$ range (if a landscaping company were to do the repairs).

I swear this could have been on an episode of "small town dumbest criminals" because it makes it really hard to get away with a crime when you leave your iphone behind at the scene of said crime. Also, when trying to flee from a crime, try and avoid the ditches.

I have been in involved in R/C aeromodeling for 20 years and this is by far the worst vandalism I have seen at a R/C field.

Sorry to see such mindless damage to your field Mark.
Looks like a lot of effort was put into building it.
At least the pea brains were caught however, that doesn't change anything for your situation. Or does it, have you considered a law suit to recover the cost of repairs?
It they are too young, you may be able to go after the parents...
The ticket may be worth the journey.

Sorry to see your hard work destroyed.

I know when I was younger Dad and the original club members at NRCM had a lot of trouble with this sort of thing.  Mostly four wheelers almost every summer but it certainly wasn't to this extent.  Really sorry to see this happen Mark.  You have a great field there.

In our case the RCMP wasn't much help. At least in your case they caught them.

Gee, I see they managed to stay on the nice short grass.
I wish I could tell them personally what I thought of their driving prowess.
We had one incident a few years back at the C.B. club, the difference was they beat up the shelter, and used the picnic tables as ramps. We found out which group it was and made them pay for the damages as well had them come out and do minor repairs and painting.
Ours was a bunch of kids on atv's that the parent's were dropping off at various spots and coming back for them at the end of the day, yours looks like it was done with a truck/suv from the pics.

Mark,
That is quite the mess >:(. Sorry to see you've got such a pile of red-necks in your area.

Don't expect much from the police. More than likely they will screw something up, intentionally, so they won't have to go to court.

In regards to a lawsuit- would one of the personal injury lawyers be the way to go?

Another possibility is;

-when these individuals are processed through the court you can discuss restitution with the Crown as part of the sentence (hopefully he'd agree)....

Hopefully there is something that can be done. Hardly seems fair for you to pick up the tab for their damage.

more than likely what will happen is he will get convicted and the judge will either order him to pay x amount or i will sue him in civil court for the repairs.  I got a quote today from a reputable landscaping company and hopefully another quote tomorrow.  In the meantime, the club will be on the hook for the repairs.

i would go to court.  when he is convicted take a photograph of him.  call the local newspapers and get them to post an article of the bastard with his picture and the damage he did

The images bring to mind a quote from Albert Einstein; "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

Sorry to see this Mark.
All that work you have put into the club. We feel your pain not to the extent you have suffered thou. Hope he has to pay every cent and then some, for damages. Court should make him put his sweat into fixing it.
