Title: CompArf New Rooky
Post by Yak Man on Dec 28th, 2011 at 10:24pm
This is my winter project.  C-ARF New Rooky.
This plane is well over 200mph and should land just as well as the Tornados do. A real grass friendly machine.
Should be a fun build and fun to fly.

KingTech K-140F Kero Start turbine engine is going to push the plane around.  The plane should come in around 20lb and this turbine put out around 30lb of thrust. So theres no lack of power :D

Looks grayt.  Can't wait to see how she flys in the spring or whenever it warms up...whichever comes first.  lol.

Do you have all the stuff you will need to get her airbourne?...fuel tubing, air line, etc..

Thanks for the kind words guys. :)
No I don't have everything yet. Still waiting on the retracts, which should be here any day. Also need servos and some
little things. The plane requires 11 servo :-? and at 200+ mph they have to be up to the task. So thats going to hurt a bit.

Heres a shot if the back end with the thrust vector unit hanging down.  :)  This plane "in the right hands" is capable of some crazy stuff with canards and thrust vectoring. :D

Real nice! The quality of the retracts look very good too, especially for the price.

Turbine runs very sweet, great combo.

Jack
I got them out of china SD Hobbies. I pay 137 for them but I see they have gone up in price. They are the spring air style. If your looking for retracts beware these have 1/2" trunion blocks.

The retracts look great, Al - I'm a big fan of the "spring air" principle - I'd rather have the gear go down than stay up in the case of a loss of air pressure.  ;)

Yes, I'm with you on that one. It's nice to know that the gear will come down if the air goes.

Here's a shot of the carnards and how they will move.
They respond to elevator movement.

Looking good Al. I say that as long as the starter is not rubbing on the tank, it will work fine. I don't think it should see any radiant heat there, but you could always epoxy another glass layer to the rear of the tank... or add a patch of that ceramic blanket.

Once you are happy with the rear workings, I'd give the bare wood back there a once-over with thinned epoxy, to fuel proof it too.

Wish I had something to work on... ;)

He's also had it in Hotel rooms, what's your point?

Title: Re: CompArf New Rooky
Post by Fingers on Jan 17th, 2012 at 5:23pm
well, to be exact, there wasn't smoke in the room, just the whine of a burst pack  :-[.... the smoke and flame came outside when the pack "lit"  :o.... and then again later at 2:00AM when the fire dept came in response to a "flare up"  :-X . But typical of Capt. Cool, he slept through that part and left me to deal with them.... >:(

Title: Re: CompArf New Rooky
Post by Fingers on Jan 23rd, 2012 at 10:01am
Back to the Elton Jet... I tried to prevail upon Capt. Cool to take his jet to the field yesterday, but he said he still had issues with the nose landing gear. MY opinion was that with that cool composite shape, and those canard fins up front, he could likely run the thing on the snow with the gear up.......... if it didn't take off it would at least melt the snow...

His reply was somewhat lacking in enthusiasm  :P

It will have enough thrust that we could just hand launch it vertically.  lol

Title: Re: CompArf New Rooky

Pointy side up or down....

Title: Re: CompArf New Rooky
Post by waverider on Jan 24th, 2012 at 11:10am
carbon fibre
the carbon transfers heat laterally
the epoxy matrix transfer heat through the thickness (short transverse direction)
I would try a carbon fibre blanket no epoxy
